A lot of people talk about injuries. One of this website's great posters, @Muhast, asked me about NFI vs. PUP.
Here are the basics:
Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) - Preseason
Here are the basics:
Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) - Preseason
- Injury must be professional football related
- Player must be unable to take part in training camp practices
- Player must be removed from the PUP list as soon as he practices, even if it's for 1 minute
- Injury must be professional football related
- Player must finish preseason on the PUP-P list
- Must sit out the first six games of the regular season
- After that, teams get five weeks (until week 11) to determine if the player will stay on PUP for the year, or make the 53.
- In addition, once a player begins practicing after Week 6, teams have 21 days to determine if he will make the 53
- If five weeks pass or 21 days pass with no determination, the player goes on PUP/IR for the remainder of the season.
- Injury must be professional football related
- Injury must be sustained while player was in a fully cleared status (healthy and participating)
- Main difference with PUP -- IR is for players who were healthy and then got hurt, PUP is for players who start training camp/regular season hurt
- Operates under the same rules as PUP and IR
- Injury must be pre-professional football related (i.e., a college football injury) or must be an injury, disease, or illness that is completely unrelated to football (cancer, etc.)
