Insider Report for Friday afternoon;
Ratliff showed his excellence and quickness in a dummy drill.
Most defensive linemen slap the dummy, then move beside it to get by.
Not Ratliff, he slaps the dummy backwards, then is quickly by with
his superior quickness then any other defensive linemen in the NFL.
Then is behind the offensive linemen, and in qb or rb face.

On punt returns, usual 4, newman, reid, felix & crayton. Felix is still
having trouble, muffed 3 and nearly dropped a 4th.

TE Bennett has a new attitude in camp. Last year against the sled, he
would get one arm up and kinda lean on it, while hoping the sled woudlnt
push back. Yet, this afternoon, he exploded into the sled, nearly flipping it
over a couple of times, whiich means in football terminology, lifting a defensive
player almost off the ground, and making the sled hinges would almost break.

As you all know, Miles Austin probably has the deepest speed on the team, but
Austin showed off his leaping ability friday, while stopping on a dime or settling into
the zone, and jumping high up in the air, outjumping defenders for the ball.

Buehler worked on his onside kicks, while wade was watching closely. First one
bounced out of bounds, but the rest hit the nail on the head. Coming right down
by the sideline, with a couple of feet over the 10 yrds past line of scrimmage

What was funny in a way, rookies victor butler & jason williams got a taste of a true
running back in the nfl, combined with their weight of about 480 pounds, they
thought they had marion barber in town, but barber ripped his way out of their grasp and took off field.

Hurd showed good focus jumping up for the ball, while jenkins drilled him in the back
before the ball got there.

Mike Hamlin made the spectaular catch of the day again, as was posted on other posts

Wade Phillips said in regards to Mike Hamlin, He has great hands, everson walls kind of hands, just spectacular, so keep your eyes on this kid.

If there's one thing I've learned about Cowboys training camps, it's to ignore all the glowing reports of no-name wide receivers that we're never going to see again.

What no name WR? Austin and Hurd have been with the team for a while now.

If you are meaning Hamlin, he is a DB....hence the Everson Walls comparison.

I was talking about Hurd, and to the league at large he's pretty much a no-name guy; though obviously we all have known him for quite some time.

I'd shocked personally if Hurd ever became anything of value at WR; by "never see again" I mean in-game plays at WR. His value is all special teams to me.

Maybe Hurd will be Jimmy Smith Part 2. Well Oronde Gadsen would have been part 2, but a few injuries ruined him. Hurd may move on to another team and really shine.

Hurd is a training camp hero and a regular season zero thus far in his career.

Austin by the way has like a 40 or 41 inch vertical. That receiver has potential.

I disagree.

Sam Hurd hasn't played much, but 300 yards in '07 as a seldom thrown to third receiver was good production from a second year player.

Hurd barely got on the field as a rookie and basically missed last season with a high ankle sprain. Hurd, playing injured, had the critical downfield block that sprung Marion Barber for his long 4th quarter score to keep us in the game against the Cardinals last year.

Thinking out loud here...............wonder if Felix doesn't want any part of returns?

kick returns maybe, and I agree because it is easy to get injured returning kicks. But I read somewhere he was spending extra time before practice learning how to field punts.

No, that's not it IMO. Fielding punts is not an easy thing to do and not everyone can do it. The ball is difficult to judge and some people simply cannot do it with any regularity.

I think he'd probably like to do it but is simply having a hard time catching it cleanly. That's too bad because he would be dangerous as heck in the open field that you get during a punt return.
