Why is Austin set?

Why wouldn't he be?

He's done nothing but make plays when he's been given the opportunity.

Aside from injuries I don’t get the hate Austin gets around here.. He’s a very explosive player every time he touches the ball.

It makes no sense. I think because he was injured last year, there's this myth among the uninformed that he gets hurt a lot.

I don't think Austin is a lock to make the team and neither is Brown.

I sure hope Brown isn't. There's no tangible, measurable reason why he should.

Wilson and Davis--P.S.

I'd keep Wilson over Brown. Wide receivers should be able to receive the football. Otherwise, just put a sixth lineman out there.

I'm partial to 4.4 and real receiving skills with Smith. Very glad he's starting to make some noise. He's really the best prospect by far of the guys on the bubble.

top 4 are set (Cooper, Gallup, Cobb and Austin). For better or worse it seems Noah Brown is 5 due to his blocking and teams ability. What then? Could this team go 7 deep? Even eliminating Davis and Guyton. You have Wilson, JVJ and an ascending Devin Smith competing for the last spot or two. Not sure any of them would make it through waivers. Good problem to have but looks like even keeping 7 a pretty good player is getting cut

Terrance was such a weird one. He never passed the eyeball test, but his per target numbers often looked great. I think the numbers look ok because it's hard to get INT numbers, and impossible to know who they were covering him with. Looking at our team, he was last or next to the last threat on the field.

And he was incredibly inconsistent. He'd follow up one great game by disappearing for the next six weeks. I don't think he was a very smart player, and his actions off the field support that position.

And he's pissed away his NFL money and now will likely never get back in the league. Part of me feels bad for him and the other part shakes my head.

The 7 receptions he had the rest of the season weren't awe inspiring enough to get their on video? Not even the one in the Texans game where it hit him in the hands, careened off and into the dbs arms!

Granted one was incomplete but he's not a scrub and I doubt any of the younger are as explosive. Just because he's not targeted as much does not mean he has no value. When he's on the field teams need to account for him at all times. The younger guys not so much.

yeh, but i'm really starting to think Noah is still a shoe-in despite a 2nd year straight of missing an massive amount of summer time due to injury.

I keep hearing about speculation about the team really wanting to give special teams coach Keith O' Quinn
as much available special teams help and contributors as possible - and the bottom of position unit guys are going to be depended to be help out.
-that's when the team may see the likes of Tavon Austin, Cedrick Wilson and Noah Brown able to help the special teams out the most.

Wilson can help with handling the punt returns. and I can see C-Will and Austin sharing punt returns.
And notice how there hasn't been any mention of Tony Pollard practicing handling punts in practice or Niners game.

So everything seems to be pointing towards Austin, Brown and Wilson in their ability to help special teams.
and i think Reggie Davis is the only one of the three speedsters that has been seen handling returns thus far.

I still see the WR unit looking like this come final cut time:

Brown had a bad year in 2017 and so did the whole team. Last year Brown had a higher percentage catch rate then Tavon. But the thing about Tavon is he is awful at WR! With his speed he just never does much. Idk if it's his route running or his hands. At least with Brown you have a guy that can block or go over the middle and post up. He has a chance to be more of a threat in the redzone. Tavon has been around a while and just has never lived up to the hype. I just want to see a big physical WR get his chance to prove himself.

That is not true with regard to Tavon Austin.

His career receiving numbers match-up to the Cole Beasley range.
