Interesting point on Marinelli

Norm Hitzges made an interesting comment regarding our defense this morning. We all know we were without Big Ro in the middle of our LBers vs the Jags. Norm mentioned we ran a 4-2-5 for many portions of the game. Yeah, 2 LBers.

This means we didn't figure we needed to fill a LB spot, just to fill a spot. We put the BEST PLAYERS on the field at that time. Status quo out the window baby! This just goes to show that Rod Marinelli is crucial to future success. Extend the man.

Regarding the O Line, the Jags were 3rd in the league in sacks up front. Two of them dudes were from that vaunted Seahawks D line last year. I believe we allowed merely one sack all day.

The one sack was primarily due to romo holding the ball for a long time.

The o line did a great job of protecting romo.

One of the nice side effects of being up 24-7 at the half is getting to play pass defense the rest of the game. I was just happy to see Hitchens playing well enough in the middle to keep McClain safely on the bench for the week.

Yes I think just 1 sack late in the game. But Romo took 3 other hits maybe? But was pretty clean all day.
I think one hit should have been flagged. If one of the other top QB's from a NFL darling team, it would have been called.

The question isn't whether we want to keep Rod...the question is whether he is willing to stay...many believe he wants to go to Tb to help Lovie Smith...which is understandable

Yes but that is our Nickel which we run over half the time. Do you know how many snaps we used that formation?

I don't buy into he wants to go to TB.
This is typical stuff, an ex player / coach will leave to reunite with ex player / coach.
How often does this happen anymore.

Media / fan hype
But sign him to an extension, all the coaches. Then that talk will stop.
Extend them during the bye week....

Leslie Frazier is Lovie's defensive coordinator. The loyalty thing works both ways. Lovie isn't dumping or demoting Frazier just to get Marinelli back.

I really like everything I hear about that guy.

I assume its already been mentioned somewhere here but I don't remember seeing a thread about how they determine who gets to play the games each week on the D-line.

Apparently Marinelli has all the D-linemen competing for 8 spots and they are awarded jerseys when they get the nod to play for any given week, so there is constant competition for starting spots with immediate weekly feedback (you get a jersey or you don't).

I think this is an excellent and very creative way to keep intensity and motivation high all throughout the season.

I don't know how they could do this with the offense, I guess they could create similar competition for the back-ups.

I don't think I've heard of that being done in Dallas before. Regardless, I like it!

Yes. We had our nickel package in for most of the game, with Sterling Moore on the field a lot. I thought the play by the line and linebackers, especially Hitchens, made it work.

In today's league you have to play a ton of nickel and dime packages because teams are so oriented to throw the ball and they tip you off with personnel packages.

I think where Marinelli/Kiffin (he's still a coach with the team) and the others have really helped is that they done a fine job with developing the talent.

We were dreadful at safety last season. Church was overrated and has his shortcomings. Wilcox couldn't stay healthy and was learning the position. Heath was awful (and still is). What I've noticed in the All-22 over the past 5 weeks is that Wilcox is becoming quite good. I would still like to see him incorporate better tackling techniques, but the angles he takes are far better and he's got some real cover skills and tracks down the ballcarrier extremely well. I would like to see a more explosive talent at SS over Church, but he's turned into a steady performer than tackles very well.

Our LB corp is so much better than it was last season. Carter is far better than he was last season and so is Durant (unfortunately on I-R). Meanwhile, they brought in McClain and Hitchens, a 4th round pick. If we could keep the LB's healthy and wanted to return all of them for next season, I think we would have the best LB corp in the game with Lee, McClain, Carter, Hitchens and Durant.

The DT play has been very good with Crawford, McClain and now Melton and even Mincey are stepping up.

The only real issues on defense I see is at CB and DE. Scandrick is playing his best ball in this scheme, but Carr and Claiborne are not designed for this scheme. And we are getting some decent play out of Moore and now Patmon is stepping up. The DE issues are really just a lack of talent due to injuries and Lawrence is well behind the 8-ball due to his injury.

Here's the deal....there's no reason why the defense cannot improve significantly and we have the flexibility to do it. There is no 'must have' draft picks that or FA pickups that will make or break the following season. And there's no reason for me to not believe that the defensive coaching staff can't improve the players we already have and bring in any newcomers in FA and the draft and turn them into more productive players that what we have.

The quality of coaching on defense, the O-Line and at WR has allowed for the Cowboys to draft the best player available and not have to be a major player in Free Agency.

He doesn't have to do either to get rod...rod can come in under any number of titles...just like he did here his first yr...just like he did for his good friend kiffin...

It's like the guy who snags a girl who has a bf and then wonders why she's cheating on him later on down the road...what don't you guys see?

Isn't Rod under contract next year with us? Correct me if I am wrong please but short of someone giving him a HC job, or Jerry agreeing to trade Marinelli, he should be ours again (if he is under contract with us through next year)?

Yes true, but doesn't mean he will leave for TB because of Lovie.
Kiffin stays as an consultant, so maybe Marinelli stays too.
That is more likely to happen than he leaves.
As someone posted, would Smith dump Frazier to get Marinelli. And would he risk dumping him, then Marinelli stays here. Then Lovie has no DC, and still needs to look.
