Bidding war coming between Cowboys and Commanders for Mike Shanahan?

Tim MacMahon E-mail News tips

Rumors are swirling that the Commanders are already wooing Mike Shanahan.

That's the same Mike Shanahan considered the favorite to replace Wade Phillips when he gets fired (or Jerry just declines to pick up his contract option for 2010).

Oh, boy, this could get interesting.

How much could Shanahan make if Jerry Jones and Daniel Snyder get into a bidding war for his services? He'd have two of the richest, most competitive owners in league, who just happen to be division rivals, trying to one-up each other.

We realize that, because it’s April 1, many of you will be suspecting that every story we post today will be part of our annual April Fool’s Day routine. In fact, most of you are so keenly aware of our ritual of making up a story on April 1 (as opposed to the ones we make up the other 364 days of the year) that you’re bracing for the inevitable “Ben Roethlisberger To Retire” headline.

(Meanwhile, roughly five percent of the audience now believes that we’re reporting Ben Roethlisberger is retiring.)

We’re not saying whether or not we’ll slip
in a little April Fool’s blurb between now and midnight, but we realize as the traffic mushrooms that perpetuating phony stories will jeopardize whatever shreds of credibility we’ve managed to compile over the years.

We say all that because, while the following story might be perceived to be an April 1 gag, it’s not.

During an impromptu PFT spot on WJFK in D.C. this morning, one of the Junkies mentioned that there was a rumor of a January meeting between Commanders owner Daniel Snyder and former Broncos coach Mike Shanahan. We’d heard the same thing, but to my recollection we’d never posted it.

With Broncos quarterback and Shanahan protege Jay Cutler now linked to the ‘Skins, it makes sense to point out that, indeed, there was/is a rumor that Snyder and Shanahan met.

We fully expect the team to deny it — just like they did last year when rumors flew that the Commanders had spoken with Bill Cowher after Joe Gibbs retired. (Cowher, by the way, would later confirm the discussions.)

And we figure that, at some point, the Commanders will have to address the new report linking them more strongly than ever to Cutler.

It’ll need to be far more convincing that Vinny Cerrato’s statement from last month.

The worst thing they could do is fire another coach after a short time.

They don't give their coaches an opportunity at all and it just screws up their entire team in the process.

They run their team like a Cowboy fan would run our team or an NBA owner would run their team.

You have to keep Zorn. You just have to.

Negotiating with Shannahan is almost as dumb as the Broncos trying to get Cassell.

if shannahan and holmgren are available, plus whoever becomes available, why would holmgren not be hired.

He is the better head coach.

I agree. I would definitely prefer Holmgren to Shanahan.

Good luck Skins.

Washington is one of two teams that changes coaches more frequently than Dallas. The other is Oakland. Mike wouldn't go to that sideshow.

Probably because Shannahan is as good of a playcaller as anyone and Holmgren always wants to be involved with picking his players.

Vinny Cerrato and Danny wouldn't like that.

You can't go wrong with either coach but I preffer Shannahan just because his WCO is more vertical and Holmgrens is the true dink and dunk style that I can not stand.

I think Holmgren is Jerry's guy anyway. Not Shanny.

And Catch is right. This would just be the old Snyder, firing and hiring his coaches every year or two. Total stupidity.

I think you got that backwards. Shanahan is reported as Jerry's guy though Holmgren and Jerry could be cool.

I can't imagine Shanahan walking into that situation there. He's way too smart and will have plenty of opportunities next year in places where he will have more control. And he probably doesn't need the money, which is about the only upside to working for Danny.

There is a reason Danny got stuck naming his new OC his new HC a few weeks later.

No, I'm going back to even last year when Holmgren did his conference call with our media. It was obvious to me that he wasn't truly retiring, even if he had to sit out for a year like he promised his wife he would. And Jerry and Holmgren supposedly have a lot of respect for each other and have been good friends for years now.

Shanahan could change that. But before Shanny was unexpectedly fired, I thought Jerry had his eye on Holmgren for 2010 if things didn't work out here.

as long as that FO is still there, it doesn't matter who they hire to coach the team, they'll still be a middling franchise

Mike Shanahan had 3 years left on his contract worth $20 million. By next year he''s have 2 and about $14 million left. Now these coaches are like the players in this regards, they don't just want to be paid as high as possible for financial gains, they want bragging rights to.

But, if Shanny likes lets say Dallas better than Washington and both owners want him bad and Jerry's willing to pay Shanny 10% more than Jerry, Shanny will most likely go to the team he likes better anyways. The extra 10% isn't worth the comfort level and structure to an already accomplished coach.

Parcells could have made more money coming out of retirement when Jerry went after him then he did. Parcy just wanted top 5 money. He could have gotten paid top $.
