I had no idea this "poison pill" of sorts was included in the trade. The Jets may come out smelling like roses with this if a deal can not be reached.

The Saints announced that they will not use the franchise tag on any of their free agents before Thursday's deadline.

The Saints still plan to sign free agent Jonathan Vilma long term, but can't before free agency. Per the terms of last year's trade, the Jets will get a second-round pick if New Orleans locks Vilma up before March. The Saints don't have a second-rounder, so they'd lose the 14th pick overall.

Wow, could work out real well for the Jets...or real badly for the Saints.

The Saints are in a real hard spot, having 24 players in free agency and of them 5 starters and 9 immediate backups. If they have to wait until March to sign Vilma, they could be in a very tight spot, especially with 8 million cap space (Might be more after cutting McAllister). If they want Vilma back, they should trade their 1stto move down in the 1st, adding a late 2nd for the Jets.
Look at this list and imagine if it were us.

Starter Immediate Backup Scrub

Joey Harrington
Duece McAllister
Lance Moore
Devery Henderson
Courtney Roby
David Patten
Mark Campbell
Eric Johnson
Jon Stinchcomb
Zach Strief

Matt Lehr
Antwan Lake
Montavious Stanley
James Reed
Troy Evans
Jonathan Vilma
Leigh Torrence
Michael Lehan
Aaron Glenn

The Vilma thing is going screw the Jets as Vilma probably ends up back in NO anyway

i thought i heard something that the giants get saints/jets pick if shockey play a certain% of plays -that would stink if the giants get the 14 pick in the draft

I think that's why the Saints don't have the 2nd round pick - the Giants got it

Yeah I believe that is correct. That's why they lost their second.

The whole thing was a bit confusing so I found this and posted it in another thread. It might help some understand it better...I still think it is crazy.

http://www.profootballtalk.com/2008/...hockey/Several astute readers have pointed out that the Saints’ attempt to trade a second-round pick in 2009 to the Giants for tight end Jeremy Shockey could be hampered by the trade through which the Saints acquired linebacker Jonathan Vilma from the Jets.

Under the trade between the Jets and the Saints, New Orleans will be required to cough up a second-round pick if Vilma participates in 85 percent of the defensive snaps this season, and if the Saints sign Vilma to a contract extension.

So how could the Saints send a potential second-rounder to the Jets and an actual second-rounder to the Giants.

Per Tom Rock of Newsday, the Giants would get the Saints’ first-round pick if the Jets get the second-rounder. If the Giants get the first-round pick, the Saints’ fifth-rounder falls out of the Shockey deal.

It affects the Giants buy potentially handing them a 14th overall first rounder in this years draft, which could affect the division and our team.
