Rams are third in the league in passing yards allowed, with 146 per game. Sounds stout, huh? But hold on a sec. They are also 24th in opponent completion percentage and 25th in opponent passer rating. How the heck do those numbers square? They don't even have any INTs.

Well, they also happen to be 28th in rushing defense, allowing 152 yards a game, at 4.7 per rush. Does this mean teams are choosing to run on them and foregoing the pass?

In comparison, Dallas is 8th against the run, giving up 86.7 and 3.9. But what's really interesting, at least to me, is Dallas' pass defense. We are 23rd in passing yards allowed, but tied for 4th in opponents' completion percent and 3rd in passer rating.

To me it really looks like this defense is improving, but like a lot of people have said, it's hard tell whether it's actual improvement or the offenses we've played.

Part of the reason why St. Louis' pass defense hasn't given up many yards is because of who they have played.

They played a 49ers team that lost Norv and still has a young, struggling qb in Alex Smith.

They played a Tampa Bay team that is pretty damn crappy.

They played a Carolina team that is having QB issues.

Those three teams are not big passing teams. Couple that with the success those team have running the ball, and there is a good reason why teams weren't airing it out. Moreover, the games have been low-scoring. The freakish passing numbers usually come in shoot-outs or blowouts when the the winning team goes in the prevent and starts giving up tons of short passing yards.

The Rams D is decent. But I don't think it is nearly as good as their numbers suggest.

Of course. The Rams' opponents have attempted only 22 passes per game. But they're completing 65.2 percent and are averaging 7.24 yards per attempt. (Our "terrible" pass defense is allowing 57.3 percent, tied for fourth-best in the league, and 6.85 YPA, which ranks 13th.) Our defense has allowed the third-lowest passer rating in the NFL (66.9), while the Rams' defense ranks 25th (101.7).

I think our stats are skued because we have been ahead in the second half and the other teams are passing most of the time playing catch up. I think our passing yards allowed will be up there for most of the season if we are ahead...

Just makes sense to me...what I care about is points allowed...obviously!

Yeah, I posted some related stats a day or two ago.

The Rams' strong ranking in pass defense (a.k.a. pass yardage) appears to be due to them having defended an unusually small number of pass attempts (only two teams have defended fewer).

Garrett should be able to do just about anything he wants against the Rams. And so this game should allow us to see what Garrett really wants (i.e., his ideal mix of power running and aggressive passing).

We'll rack up 450 yards, 40 points, and all because for the fourth straight week, we haven't played anybody.

When you are ahead, you run the clock. Running the clock means running the ball instead of passing. Rams are 0-3 meaning they were losing quite a bit and their opponents where running the clock. They are 28th in run defense giving up over 150 yards per game on the ground. Their great looking pass defense is smoke and mirrors.
