Cowboys once feared Pacman

When Adam "Pacman" Jones was coming out of college, his "folder" was littered with so many red flags the Cowboys took him off their draft board. The potential risk was too great in 2005. But it's 2008, and the atmosphere has changed at Valley Ranch. Much like the Patriots' acquisition of receiver Randy Moss last year, trading for Jones may require nothing more than a fourth-round pick.

He has more red flags than ever and suddenly we want him.... Makes perfect sense.

This is all most likely leading up to one big gamble.

Well, his character issues meant a high pick and also big money. Now it means a day 2 with a Tank Johnson type contract.

I don't want to give up a 4th rounder cause I'm too concerned this 24 year old still has a long way to go. If we can get him for a 5th, I'll be on board. Besides we need those first 4 picks to draft a CB, RB, WR (if we can't trade for a good vet WR) & either a DT, SS, another CB, or an ILB.

Reason they avoided him before is because he was going to get top 10 money. Now we can get him at no financial risk.

I could have sworn when the Cowboys were interested in Tank, there were articles saying that Tank was off Parcell's board but that Pacman was kept on the board. But even if true, that was when they would have had to gamble with a first round pick and a large bonus and now its more like a 5th round pick and literally nothing is being gambled financially. Parcells was even a guy that was interested in giving a guy a last chance when they've painted themselves into a corner.

What are the Cowboys going to do with a 4th pick that would be better than taking a risk on Pacman? Draft Skyler Green?

If a 4th round pick doesn't work out, it isn't a very big deal. But if a 4th round pick can get you a legitimate top 10 CB and punt returner in the NFL (with the chance it doesn't pan out), why not?

how things change......

..we took him off our draft board.

First of all, they wouldn't do that because SOMEBODY was going to draft him and the Titans did at #6 that year.

So by removing him, you changed the order in some way as to what other teams were going to do, making it more difficult to predict what the Cowboy choices might be.

Secondly, he wasn't ever going to be available to us where we were drafting from that year..he was going to be long gone...so whether he stayed on our Draft Board or not, he wasn't going to be available.

And actually, had he dropped to our pick, like Brady did to us last year, and nobody had drafted him, chances are that if Dallas was pre-disposed to not take him for off the field issues, they still would have entertained trades to move up for another team to take him in our slot.

So that would have necessitated the Cowboys to have done a full eval of him just based on that possibility. So he's not off our Draft Board, only not being considered as a likely choice we would make.

The only reason they change is because the lower price tag in draft pick/money.

Good thing for us times are changin because he will be the missing ingredient.

I don't think they took him off "the" draft board. But probably removed his name from consideration as a player they would select.

What they did, is most likely exactly what they did with Jeremy Stevens, they took his name and put it above the draft board, and thus not give him a round assignment and have him "off" the board so to speak.

Could it have anything to do with BP being gone?

I believe so.....

Your perspective changes when your finger is on the panic button.

Why should we panic now before the draft has even played out?? Who knows what CB is going to be there at #122. According to Draft Tek, CBs Antwaun Molden, Eastern Kentucky; Tyvon Branch, U. Conn; Patrick Lee, Auburn; & Trae Williams, South Florida could all be available at that pick.

Are they any better than Jones at CB? I doubt it. One thing I know for sure--none of them has been charged with or committed 10% of the crimes that Jones has.
We are not that desperate that we have to stoop so low as to trade for a non-repentant thug who is responsible for paralyzing a bouncer with a wife & child.
This is one of the all-time best CB classes, so we don't need this thug. Take Aqib Talib & Antoine Cason with the first two picks, and all of a sudden, we're set.....and not a hoodlum among them.
