RIP, Mr. Cross. Loved the guy from the days when NFL pregame and other coverage was meaningful for me. That NFL on CBS Crew was top notch and he was a big part of that.

had no idea he was that old.
Grew up watching NFL Today with Brent Muss, Jimmy the Greek and Irv Cross .

RIP Irv...
*Same here, tho, with the rapid absence of "the Greeks" termination, they had brought in some "sports babe" and I can't recall what her name is at present,if my life depended on it*o_O

On the sidelines and in the studio, Irv Cross presented a polished and professional image on the screen. He brought a positive energy to his work. My mother wasn't really a football fan, but she was surprised and delighted to see him in that role. As many have stated in previous comments, I grew up watching "The NFL Today". It was the perfect lead-in to Sunday afternoons watching NFL football. I just read on the official Eagles website that after Cross retired from the league, the Cowboys front office offered him a job. A life well-lived on the gridiron and beyond - RIP Mr. Cross.

Anyone in my age group grew up watching the NFL Today. Such great memories as a kid watching that pregame show. I had a neighbor.... hell, I was 8, im guessing he was in his late 50s, that used to invite me and a friend across the street into his home to watch the games. He used to serve us Dr. Pepper and he would always make us lunch. I dont think he worked and Im pretty sure he was a Korean War veteran. He was married, but in today's world hed be viewed as very strange having two young boys in his house like that. He never did anything but be friendly to us, and I have such fond memories of watching football, eating good meals.... and of course those Dr. Peppers. We always watch NFL Today together and Irv Cross. Such great childhood memories that spurned on my love of the NFL today.

Irv Cross, a former NFL defensive back who became one of the cornerstones of The NFL Today in the 1970s, has died. He was 81.

The Eagles announced his passing on Sunday night.

Cross played for the Eagles from 1961 through 1965, and again in 1969. He spent 1966 through 1968 with the Rams. Cross was a two-time Pro Bowler, in 1964 and 1965.

After his playing career ended, Cross became a broadcaster with CBS in 1971. Cross formed part of the legendary team that launched The NFL Today in 1975. The show became appointment viewing, with Cross joined by Brent Musburger and, eventually, Phyllis George and Jimmy “The Greek” Snyder.

Cross worked on The NFL Today from 1975 through 1989. He received the Hall of Fame’s Pete Rozelle Radio-Television Award in 2009.

We extend our condolences to Irv’s family, friends, and colleagues.

Very sad news. Another part of the happy childhood memories of football gone. RIP
I remember his closet Cowboy fan pick in the 1st Jimmy Johnson coached Dallas Cowboys 1989 game vs. the Saints. He was wrong, but he believed in Jimmy Johnson's Dallas Cowboys.

I read this over the weekend. You know usually, I try to do a little write up on what I know or remember about a person but this time, I think I'll just go with this.

RIP Irvin Acie Cross (July 27, 1939 – February 28, 2021)

ABQCOWBOY - kudos for that clip.
NFL Football in the 70's ---- and earlier. Every player who suited up back then was tough.

Sure were Moto. I know the younger posters don't believe it when we say that the game was different then, rougher, tougher. I know they probably just think I'm old, which is also true, I am, but the game was tougher then.

Upending an airborne WR, body-slamming a QB (the infamous Joe "Turkey"Jones - Terry Bradshaw sack), stepping on a player's back while on the ground (what Cowboys player got stomped on in that clip?), clothesline tackle ("Night Train Necktie"), routine facemask...
The NFL was super brutal when it first started a century ago.

Yup, the Steelers wouldn't have sniffed a SB with todays rules.

What a lot of of NFL younger fans don't realize is that the Pittsburgh Steelers is the 7th oldest NFL franchise --but was the sorriest for four decades before their rise to be one of pro football's iconic teams during the 1970s.
