IRVIN FEARS HOLT?

We mentioned in this week's PFT Ten-Pack that Michael Irvin of ESPN inexplicably omitted Rams receiver Torry Holt from Irvin's list of the top five "Playmakers" from Sunday's game.

Holt had eight catches for 154 yards and three touchdowns. Along the way, he broke the 10,000-yard career receiving barrier.

But Irvin snubbed him, giving both of the top two spots to a guy who had more than 100 less yards on Sunday.

So what gives?

As one reader suggested, Irvin fears that, after Holt retires, he'll bump Irvin off of ESPN. Holt has done well as a guest analyst on ESPN's draft coverage, and Irvin is too erratic and too controversial. At times, he seems incoherent.

What makes Irvin indispensable to ESPN is his ability to get access to controversial players like T.O. and Steve Smith and Chad Johnson. But in the years after Holt retires, he'll likely be able to do the same thing.

We also think that Irvin sees Holt getting closer and closer to his career stats -- and in far fewer seasons. Irvin had 750 catches for 11,904 yards and 65 touchdowns in 12 seasons. Holt has 656 catches for 10,013 yards and 61 touchdowns in seven seasons and change.

I am at a loss for words. Why would anyone publish this story? I don't care that it is untrue and there are no facts to substantiate it. I just do not understand why something like this is news worthy. This is so incredibly stupid.

Because a cheap shot at Irvin gets people interested.

PS Holt will have a better career than Irvin (numbers wise)

If you have ever heard Florio speak (he is a frequent guest on the Philly sports radio programs), he has a clear anti-Cowboy (I'd even say anti-Texas) bias and takes cheap shots at every opportunity.

Holt is a nice WR but in Michael's defense he did have a broken leg his 2nd year, Aikman's 1st and that last season of his should have an asterick considering he couldn't walk out of philly. Holt hasn't had any lengthy injuries.

If I had to start a team, I'd take Mike at 22 over Holt at 22 any day of the week and twice on Sundays.

Mike is "THEEE PlayMaker".

Mike was bigger, stronger and just as fast as Holt in their primes. He had a HUGE heart and was the emotional leader of a 3 time SB team.

He was T.O. without the attitude.

Holt will have better numbers than everyone but Rice by the time he calls it quits.

Comparing Holt to Irvin is apples to oranges. Holt is faster and is basicly on a run and shoot offense. Irvin sacrificed stats for championships.

there was nothing wrong with Irvin's stats as FYI...he put up big numbers from 1991-1998....and the only yr he didnt get 1000+ yds in that time was that 1996 season when he had that ridiculous 5 game suspension (ended up with 64 catches for 962 in 11 games, which would have played out to about 93 catches for 1400 yds had he played in all 16 games)...rules were different then and DB's and LB's could be more physical, yet Irvin still had seasons like 91 and 95 where he caught 93 for 1523 yds and 111 for 1603 yds...and oh yeah, he was great in the postseason too

this guy never gets enough credit for being a tremendous player

I love Holt as an NC State fan, but he should have better numbers that Irvin. Look how they throw the ball all over the yard. 88 had to play with 22, and if anybody remembers we ran the ball a little bit.
