I'm not sure Dez would have to sign a deal presented before the draft until after the draft.
I'm not sure on the last day to sign rules but I think there is a way to get this poison pill in place.

The NFL does not allow poison pills in these types of contracts. They put rules in place to prevent it after Steve Hutchinson went from the Seahawks to the Vikings on a poison pill contract.

We are not, but that doesn't mean we can't learn from successful teams in the league. Has any team won a Super Bowl in the last twenty years with 10% of their salary cap devoted to a single receiver?

Not sure about the WR issue...too lazy to search.

I do know however that we are having more success trying to learn from the Past COWBOYS team in establishing a good Oline, QB, WR and RB with an emphasis on the running game...even if we get rid of Murray.

Instead of trying to emulate the Patriots.

Trying to emulate the patriots has had us waste Picks on Fasano, Bennett and Escobar in trying to emulate the 2 TE package the patriots were doing.

I like like trying to emulate the old cowboys team.

Now one could argue we could emulate the old cowboys and trade away one of our best players like we did with HW...However we are not going to get the same haul we did with him that would would get with dez.

I would also say it took us a good number of years before we finally got a WR worthy of replacing the playmaker and I don't want to turn around and get rid of him and go searching again.

Bird in the hand is better than two in the bush.

Browns have 2 1st rounders this year, and no Gordon. I could see them making a run.

Your premise is faulty because Dez want's top money and play for a championship team just like DeMarco probably does.
Money talks and BS walks. With Luck, Hilton, Dez & DeMarco, the offense could cover for lots of defensive shortcomings
just like we did.[/quote]
Except for the fact that it totally wouldn't.

The Colts suck, and they would continue to suck even with Dez and DeMarco.

I'd like to think after the past few years that our front office has earned the benefit of the doubt of being likely to perform better than the Browns in the first round.

Call me gutless, but I'll take the known young phenom just entering his prime over the unknown of two 1st round draft picks.

It's a good debate though.

A) that's not the point
B) losing DeMarco won't mean anything
C) if we lost Dez we'd be drafting a top flight WR
D) our defense is at least a little better than the maginot line
E) the Colts would have trouble upgrading their sieve of an OL or doing anything with their defense losing two #1s and spending $20+ mil on those guys, especially with Luck's rookie contract ending after next year. You're looking at $40 million on 3 players. Good luck with that.

Yea, it's not quite that black and white though.

It's the young phenom + the huge cap hit + the minutiae of the off-field issues, even if they are bs.

Losing DeMarco won't mean anything, huh? Good luck with next year after Romo gets clobbered into traction about
the second game.

Finding another Dez at the bottom of the 1st round, huh? Good luck with that scenario.

You might just be right about the defense but how good will they be if the offense is toothless led by Weeden, huh?

The Colts have their issues just like we do and we certainly exposed some of them last year like NE did. But, if
their offense improves, and they win games like they did last year, and NE gets a year older...Who Knows?

Who can project what the cap escalation will be over the next 4 or 5 years... $40mil on 3 players might be the norm for
good teams.

Yeah, no poison pills. So stop worrying about it. If, for instance, the Colts wanted to sign Dez and added into the contract that he would be playing for a sane owner, the NFL would step in and squash that deal.

Wait, which owner is "sane" again? :D

None of that is accurate....

You don't find another Dez, you find another explosive WR. There are 3-4 of them this year who won't necessarily match his production, but won't stop this offense from being effective. For all the plays he does make, Dez does have his flaws. A guy who gets open and is good after the catch could be just as effective as Dez.

I think you are worried about too much here.
Colts can draft a WR & a RB in this years draft. Still be a player in the FA market to get OL & defense help. Still have their #1 pick next year. All the while because they have Luck, they are still a playoff team.

I think they would opt to protect Luck and go with a lesser WR, as they do have a few of those who are pretty good, and draft OL. RB draft class is deep too. I doubt they would try to sign both Dez and Murray.
If they have the cap space, why not go after Lynch then.

With where they are drafting, would you take a chance on hitting on a rookie RB or WR? They could easily land Dez and DeMarco
and have two proven players to help Luck. DeMarco is one of the best blocking RB's in the league and this will
provide Luck with another 1/2 second in the pocket. With Dez and Hilton to throw to, could any team stop them?
I agree that drafting players is absolutely the best way to build a team but, I think Indy is in a Win SB now mode
and who knows if a bottom 1st round WR would help them do that.

Why would they look at Lynch if DeMarco is 4 years younger?

Just saw a blog that correctly pointed out a team like Indy could look at giving up two #1s, especially since they're likely to be late rounders, as very reasonable for the opportunity to land Dez. Oh, and they have a ton of cap room. They could lock up the Luck to Dez connection for life, just like we think we're going to do.

Why do I get a really bad feeling about this?

No, not really.

No one is going to ruin their cap and give up draft picks for a WR. Not even Dez.

There is another caveat to the low round 1 team offering an unmatchable contract to Dez with
the understanding that the deal is after the draft this year. That way the 2 no. 1 picks would
come next year and the following year. The team ( Indy) would get our WR this year and
not have to give up picks until next year. That way they could get DeMarco and Dez
with little to no fuss on their way to the SB.

Having lots of Cap space is very attractive.

this Isnt true. it would be a pick this and next year

Why is Indy in a must-win mode now? Don't get that. Andrew is still young and they are more than a Dez and Murray away from winning the SB. They need to work on both lines and the defense.
