Is anyone else worried about chemistry on defense?

Our D was unspectacular last season but one thing they had was chemistry. All the JAGs came together and did their parts and they overachieved into a defense that complimented our offense quite well. It seems as though we're letting all the mediocre parts leave and we're replacing them with other mediocre parts, but there is no guarantee that these JAGs will work together well like last year's defense. I know Marinelli did a great job last year, but who else is a little concerned that a different cast of characters might not mesh as well with each other or with coach Marinelli? Everybody says a good offense is the best defense, but there's something to be said for the way last year's D came together and did just enough to make it a very good team overall.

The chemistry part is an issue, but how well these replacement players perform is another.

If they resign McClain, then at a minimum they could have a quality starting three of Lee, McClain and Hitchens. Just having Lee back would make that group much better than it was. It should be noted that Gachkar's defensive coordinator at Missouri was our very own Matt Eberflus, so I think his transition would be pretty seamless.

Thought I read that Eberfuls left Mizzou before he actually enrolled. He knows of him because of contacts on Mizzou's staff. I could have read that wrong.

Not at all. The players we decided not to let go were not going to help out. JAGs can be replaced by JAGs with no problem. They will have a whole offseason and then the season to gel. You can't keep bringing back the same band if it's not working out. And the defense was not good last year. They were masked at times by the offense's ability to control the game but in the end, they were exposed and were our downfall.

I have an off topic question, I can post replies but I cannot post new threads, it says I don't have sufficient privileges, why?

I'm pretty sure he had two seasons under Eberflus. He also had two seasons under Bisaccia in San Diego so he will certainly jump right into special teams here.

The part in bold is what makes losing Murray so troubling. The offense kept them off the field which won many games for us. We'll have to find a way to control the clock whether by committee or determining who will carry the load at RB.

I'm more worried about lack of talent than I am chemistry.

I was going to say the same thing. I think we greatly over-achieved on defense last year. I know we are only going into the 3rd week of FA but you have to admit the defense has taken a step back. We can all point to the draft but that is a gamble when you are picking top 5 much-less the bottom 5 of each round..

As far as pass rush, Greg Hardy is the only option in my mind. Even if you manage to draft a great rookie at #27, they simply don't put up the numbers their first year.

This is it in a nutshell. While I am less critical of the additions of Brinkley, White and Gachkar than most, they are still talent deficient on the defensive line and secondary. Way short of difference makers on defense.

Well thought out and well stated. This should be in off topic board.
I think the direction the team is headed in is - inprove through the draft. Plug in parts where needed in free agency.
They are looking for a skill set specific player and hopefull.... the plus in player fits in. Something like New England does year to year. The defense they are playing now is better than the last few years and Marinelli is firing them up and putting them in position to hold the line.
As a side note - The LB's at the beginning of the year looks like the major weakness in the defensive side. But with stepping up and plugging in they were the best group on defense. After the FA losses this year..... I just hope Lee comes back and plays outside somewhere and contributed.
D line drafted players can step up this year.
As we see now Steven is in charge and will hold the $ CAP line and get younger players in the draft.
So we are not selling out to the short Romo window and then fall into the NFL wasteland when he goes because of CAP problems.
