Is anyone else worried about chemistry on defense?

That's true but come playoff time we need a defense that can actually play. Rodgers on one leg had an easy day of it.

Definitely, but that isn't gonna happen this season, so they are gonna have to ride the offense again.

Our D was unspectacular last season but one thing they had was chemistry. All the JAGs came together and did their parts and they overachieved into a defense that complimented our offense quite well. It seems as though we're letting all the mediocre parts leave and we're replacing them with other mediocre parts, but there is no guarantee that these JAGs will work together well like last year's defense. I know Marinelli did a great job last year, but who else is a little concerned that a different cast of characters might not mesh as well with each other or with coach Marinelli? Everybody says a good offense is the best defense, but there's something to be said for the way last year's D came together and did just enough to make it a very good team overall.

Both yes and no. Losing players, on either side of the ball can change the chemistry. Of what was being built. But a good 12 to 18 players were expected to leave on most teams, simply by the churning process. And we didn't really lose anyone that was not expected to return, as we had a highly unusual amount of FA's this year. Murray hurt but was expected. Durant and Carter, one or the other was but not both.

However, of the players that did leave, Durant 6 games played, Carter, in and out of the lineup, and played well toward the end, but how inconsistent was he throughout the year / career. Harris had a not so good of a year, though his ST's will be missed. But someone usually steps up.
Parnell or Free, one was going to be gone, Melton, didn't expect him back.

So far the rest of our FA's not signed anywhere, nor with us. They where role players that can be replaced.
Other than McClain that is. Though I wouldn't mind seeing Spencer brought back. But I think he, Hayden, Spillman, all can wait a while to see what happens.

Overall not as concerned with the chemistry, as I initially thought. A RB, rather McFadden and / or a draft pick, they have it or they don't, as for running ability, but need a decent OL in which we have. So not worried there. That's what camp is for.

We had the chance to end that game, a few times. Rodgers should of been a non factor to be quite honest. Our defense played admirably until the 4th, by then we should have been up by 14 and been out of reach

Chemistry is always a concern for every team anytime changes are required. The first consideration for those attempting to improve upon a team's effectiveness is to satisfy the lack of talent first and foremost. Usually, the chemistry factor isn't discovered until the team has already been assembled. It's difficult to predict how that element might turn out but I trust Will McClay to get it right. He's been at it long enough and has enjoyed enough success to have confidence in his abilities. Hopefully, he'll continue in that direction. I think we're on the upswing now.

I think chemistry problems come from upsetting the internal team order of things with a high contract free agent who can many times want to jump to the top of the heap, where it then takes time for the pecking order to get re-established..........bringing in "value" free agents stays away from that problem

Chemistry on defense is primarily a concern with the the back 7. The job of the DL in Marinelli's defense is very simple.

The starting secondary appears to be the same as last year as of right now. I didn't think they would keep Carr without a pay cut, but maybe chemistry is a reason to keep him over a slightly more talented free agent. The LBs will be Lee and Hitchens with an SLB that plays 50% of the snaps so not much change there.

One of the major benefits of running your organization consistently is that it's a lot easier to plug new players into a strong existing culture than it is to set that culture in the first place.

I think we'll do a good job of filling holes with guys who *could* start for us in a pinch, and then bringing in talented young players to develop and push for playing time underneath them. the good news on defense is that the talent level everywhere was so mediocre that you have lots of opportunities to add players who can actually offer real competition. The new blood might even help in that regard, as it increases that level of uncertainty since they're effectively shaking the jar and letting them all fight for playing time again.

The part in bold is a great point that I hadn't considered. I do like that we have a set plan now and are willing to stick to it.

I'm infinitely more worried about talent and health on defense than about chemistry. Chemistry is the first-world problem of NFL defenses.

Chemistry is the lease of their worries. I just want talent on the defense and at current we half none. None, I tell you. Not one guy on our defense (if the pro bowl was selected today) would be named a Pro Bowler. Not one would start for the top-tier teams in the NFL.

I'm worried about chemistry all across the board. That's why I'm not a particularly happy camper at this point. But can't be helped. Glad you brought this up because people discount it, I think, in this world of Madden Plug & Play. To me, it's half the battle. We won't know they boys hit the field.....

We have lost 1 starter so far and by all reports, the coaching staff were not the biggest Bruce Carter fans . Selvie, Spencer and McClain are still out there, but honestly, the only one I hope returns is McClain. Spencer or Selvie can as depth, but I will not lose sleep over either. Durant was a favorite among the defensive coaches, but he finished the season on IR...again. While we are not better than last year, until McClain signs some where else, I don't see how we are worse.

Not really. With Marinelli as the common denominator between players, I'm pretty sure chemistry will not be an issue.

Thank you Boyzmamacita for a good talk about subject.
I guess we will see when the dust settles after Free Agency and the Draft.
Hopefully it's not a look at all that talent. Too bad they can't play together.
