Is Carr going to play with the huge cap hit?

I thought the Cowboys would do something to reduce his cap hit this year but with only 10 days to camp nothing yet. Perhaps he refuses and the Cowboys have no choice. I don't think they want to cut him.

What needs to be done? He is not impacting the Cowboys ability to do anything

The team has no leverage here. But next year the team will have all the leverage. I suspect the team was trying to offer a compromise given its inevitable he'll be cut or accept a lower contract next year, but they have no way to force Carr to do that. He may just want to play it out as is and hit free agency next season.

I believe the focus here was to address Dez Bryant before doing anything else. I think now the focus shifts to Brandon Carr. My original thoughts were there was no way he made it to September with the same contact, despite Jerry Jones suggesting that he will be here whether he takes a pay cut or not, I'm still not buying it.

For people who say that he isn't doing anything to impact the Cowboys, you've obviously not looked at his contract or don't understand the fact that you have to pay other players.

Training camp is going to move forward and if we go into September with all players healthy i.e. Claiborne, I think you'll see that Carr is cut if he doesn't take a pay cut.

Cutting him gives us significant cap savings that can be used to re-sign players like Crawford and potentially Hardy long term. Get's us an extra 8 million dollars this year, 7 million dollars next year, and 13 million dollars in 2017.

To suggest they have no leverage again shows that people don't know what leverage is.

Brandon Carr's base salary is 7.5 million dollars this year. Do you know how much he will be paid if he is cut in August or September? I'm guessing 3 to 3.5 million tops. And I doubt he gets any sort of long term security at that point in free agency. Taking a cut to 4 million per year, gives him some sort of security and incentive to want to stay with the team. It's the exact same reason Doug Free stayed.

Carr better hope that Mo doesn't show promise or any other of the young CBs makes him expendable. It would suck if he ends up being a late training camp casualty because the chances increases for him of playing at or slightly above the vet minimum. Our pass rush this season could make him expendable. Sometimes having all of the leverage can backfire especially if there is an unwillingness to compromise.

You think that if Carr were a FA he'd get the vet minimum?

Maybe not quite the vet minimum, but who is out there who will give him a lot of money right before the season starts? Teams in contention will have allocated most of their spending already, and given that it's football, it's hard to fit a new CB into your defense at the last second, without any training camp to get him comfortable in the system.

Do I think that he has lived up to his salary... Absolutely not!

However, he has the leverage in this situation. They are not going to cut him (this year). You pretty much dump dead money into next year and end up losing a player. If they cut him Jones moves into starting spot at corner and then you have to gamble that Mo is healthy as a number 3 corner or that Correy White or Patton can step into that number three spot. Jones would do wonders on this defense at FS and Carr (who played better in December) may look a whole lot better with an improved pass rush.

I want to agree... but Training Camp and all four preseason games are still ahead...

If we were in the middle of Camp or the preseason games I would agree... but there is still plenty of time to mix in a veteran corner into your system

Cowboys only gain leverage if a extra CB steps up during camp, until then Carr is needed

Why mess with it now? Unless there's a last minute signing to make room for

Yea, I meant like if the Cowboys released him right before the season, he'd have trouble finding money elsewhere.

If you can get a $3M pay cut out of him you can always roll that money to a future year. Martin and Fredbeard won't be cheap to sign.

Why are many focused on what Carr is making. Yes, he has not lived up to what he is being paid. but he is not horrible. could have been, or could be much worse.
There is nothing at this point that we need his pay reduced. No player out there to come in and make an impact to need that money. Unless you are still holding out for AP.

Focus on how Carr can make this D better, not how much his contract is. If they redo his deal, great, if not, wait until the off season to waste bandwidth on. LOL.

Some seriously overpaid players on that list.
