Good points. The salary cap hit AND picks mean that teams pay on the double.

No team will pay "market value" AND give up 2 x 1sts.

That's the kicker.
Ex. Minn didn't trade for Cousins. People can debate if they overpaid in salary but they didn't lose draft picks in a trade
This is why the Cooper deal bothered me some. A 1st rounder PLUS a huge contract. But would've been real bad if we rented him for 1/2 season for a 1st rounder, so we had to sign him.

I think his point is a 1st rounder (or two) PLUS the mega contract.
So you're trading the opportunity cost of the high draft picks AND maybe 2 (or 3?) already proven star position players.
The dynamic is different once the max contract enters the picture combined with the draft picks.
