Jordan Canzeri, RB, 5-9 #195 Iowa - Dunbar's Replacement

pick him up as UDFA

2015 - carries 178 yards 976

It was a sign of things to come for Canzeri, who has been the Hawkeyes’ leading rusher in 2015, and looks like one of the best backs in the Big Ten this season.

It’s been a whale of a season for the senior out of Troy, NY, who has grown to a solid 192 pounds in his 5-foot-9 frame. Canzeri looks as healthy as he ever has, and he’s proving to the Hawkeye faithful and NFL scouts that he’s more than just a change of pace back. This is a featured back in any offense with the ability to grind out tough yards as well as hit home runs on big plays both on the perimeter running the ball and catching passes out of the backfield.

I think we should still go after a back in the draft. I wouldn't be terrible mad if he started next year, but id feel a little better knowing we are looking to the future at the RB position as well. It's to important for this offense to believe that he will have the same success next year.

If he weren't a guy as old as he is with the injury history he has?

Yes. He's been good this year. He'd be leading the league in rushing if he had been the #1 guy when the season started. That's with pure crap at QB.

However, considering his age and injury history, I still want him back, but you need to draft a young guy too.

McFadden is good enough

However. ...I don't want a good running back.
I want a great running back.

A strong ground and pound rushing attack should be this offenses main identity.

The running game is the last thing I'm worried about.

Agreed. Dallas has enough holes (#2 WR, QB, DL, MLB, Secondary), and there are only so many draft choices, roster spots, and only so much cap space. It's all about priorities. RB is way down the list as a necessity.

After watching the total lack of this team's ability to score rushing TDs,?i have to disagree.murray made a huge difference in the red zone due to his ability to score. RB needs to be s top priority in this draft. It should have been a top priority last year. This offense requires an every down back that can wear the defense down or you get the results that they have had this year.

Is Darren McFadden a good enough running back with a healthy Tony Romo and healthy Dez Bryant?

Would people feel comfortable going into the season with him, Turbin, and Dunbar if we allocated our resources on offense towards a high caliber 2nd receiver instead of drafting or signing any running backs?

How the off-season would look:

Team re-signs Dunbar and Turbin, but does not re-sign Hardy, Claiborne, or Hanna. It cuts Free and Carr.

Either Green or Collins starts at right tackle, while either Collins or Leary starts at left guard. Swaim becomes the #2 tight end until Escobar returns.

Team goes after Jeffery or Gordon in free agency at WR and Norman if he is not franchised at CB and maybe Weddle or Berry.

Team drafts pretty much all defense in the draft, especially in the secondary.

YES

DMC was super cheap.... like Blue Light special. If Murray would play for that I am sure he would still be here.

But no I am not comfortable with DMC as bell cow.

Murray would be an idiot to play for that. Between the preseason regular season and playoffs....Murray touched the ball 500 times between throwing and catching. If you REQUIRE one guy to be your offense....you have to PAY for that. We are paying a coach 6m a year.....to give the ball to the same guy 500 times. Until we design an offense that is less predictable....we are not going to find someone who will touch the ball 500 times a year for 1m dollars. It is disgusting that Garrett is paid so much to run a 3 yards and a cloud of dust operation....

I got a chance to meet him last summer at a golf fundraiser for Special Olympics that he was helping out with. He seems like a really nice young man; very polite, friendly, excited about the team, soft spoken but not shy. My first thought seeing him was "wow, he's smaller than I expected." Smaller as in height but well built.

He missed a few games with an ankle sprain otherwise yardage would have been higher. It was reported as a high ankle sprain but I think he was back in only three or four weeks. He runs pretty tough for his size and is definitely a spark plug for the Iowa offense...breaks off some big runs.

The fact that we cycled through several backs trying to find a suitable one to at least pair with McFadden hopefully showed the staff we need to try that again.

Whoops. That was supposed to read that we don't need to try that again.

My take on this is as follows - are the numbers good for the running game? Yeah, for the most part they look good. But were we able to ride the running game? Was it something we could rely upon to make life easier for the backup QBs? I don't think so. And moreover, given his injury history - regardless of what his stats are this year (which are good, not great) - how can anyone feel like McFadden is someone you can rely on for next year? No way would I ever think, "well, you can bank on the RB spot being settled, ol' DMac is there."

It also helped Murray I'm sure to have a healthy Dez and Romo in those goaline situations.

But perhaps it was all Murray.... After all Murray showed this year he can excel even in adverse conditions....oh wait....

Folks, McFadden is SIGNED through next year. He is a valuable vet to have.............and, at this stage of his career (despite his 1K season) spell a young stud back like a Elliott or Henry. A combo of he and Henry next year would be lethal.
