Is it bad draft strategy to go heavy on defense?

Ideally the bpa (or bpa in that tier of players) fills a defensive need. Its a real possibility the tier of players has OT, RB or WR being graded higher by a fair margin than any DE, DT, CB or FS available at 27. I'm ok with just about any position if that player is the BPA. Last year I would have been ok with Sammy Watkins if he fell, or Beckham. Maybe its not a need, but what if Dez blew his knee week 1? Would anyone have felt comfortable with T. Will and Beasley as the top WR core for a season? Injuries are too unpredictable in the NFL to draft specifically for need. Whats a strength now may be a weakness by the time injuries hit and if said strength holds you have depth and flexibility when it comes time for 2nd contracts.

We get Lee, DLaw and Claiborne back from injury
Add McClain, Spencer, Durant and Moore from our guys
Add a DT and/or DE in FA
Add a DT, DE, CB in the draft

Good plan. IMO you better add a safety in there.

I know, I know... BPA.

BUT, if we are really to help get Romo a ring I think there is enough offensive pieces in place.

I would throw as many defensive players up against the wall and see which ones stick?

Giants went heavy on DE's years back and it helped home get 2 superbowls.

Bad strategy?

They went heavy on DE because DE was BPA when they picked

Here are the options if doing it right, IMO

--BPA absolute, or

--Take best player of relative need in highest remaining tier group, or

--If no major need in highest current tier group, you can trade to match value and need...just don't get too cute

So, if for example, the remaking players in our highest tier group are a WR and a RB, we either take one of them or trade out of the spot if we get decent trade value.

The key is to get the best players possible that can hopefully provide term help for team at discounted rate (rookie contract).
It's a huge opportunity.
