Like all true Cowboys fans, I had a restless night tossing and turning trying to figure out whats wrong. While the first thought that came to mind was "Zimmer Sucks", my more reasoned approach is perhaps we don't have the team speed we need to have to run a 3-4. Outside of Ware, where is the speed in the linebackers? Then outside of Newman (and perhaps Watkins) where is the speed in the secondary?
Think that lack the speed severly limits our ability to play the defensive schemes we play, and thats the biggest problem. Call it a round peg in a square hole. Call it being stubborn on Pacell's part, but bottom line we still don't have the athletes (I mean fast, quick, strong, smart and fast (worth saying fast twice)) required to match up against most complex and speedy offenses. We aren't alone in this regard. Look at what the Commanders defense did this year. Best DC perhaps in the league in Greg Williams and the defense didn't do squat. You still have to have the right mix of athletes and we just aren't there folks.
Ok, if you present a problem like I did above, you have to provide a solution so here goes:
One: Draft or pick up a free agent edge pashrusher who can routinely beat almost any OT in the leaque one on one. Couple him with Ware and thats a start (don't tell me Ellis, as he's not a longterm fix).
Two: Next, run pass coverage drills with our two inside backers until their tongues are dragging. Make them better in coverage or for gods sakes play more nickel and dime packages when your going against West Coast Offenses.
Three: Move Henry to FS as he has good ballhawking skills, but doesn't have the quickness or speed to stay with better then average wide receivers anymore.
Four: Draft or pickup another corner via free Agency to replace Henry.
Five: Jerry spend the money it takes to do the above. Open the piggybank and if, I repeat, if there is a stud out there who can improve the team, don't be outbid for his services. I've heard for about three years we didn't get this player or that player because the market price was too high. Well, think Randy Thomas instead of Rivera at right guard (he was available). Think Antoine Whitfield of Minn at another corner. (he was available). If there are some player we (the fans) want, you want, hell Bill wants and I agree everyone else in the league wants who is available in the offseason get them if at all possible. I think if we had the two players I mentioned earlier right now, we wouldn't be where we are talent wize and I believe our record would be improved over 9 and 7.
Six: I think we really need some better coachs on the defensive side of the house. In particular, the D-line has too much talent not to be better. Also, why don't these guys ever knock down a pass at the line. I almost never see their hands in the air. One of two additional passes deflected at the line is huge in the course of a game.
I'm rambled enough. I sincerely hope we can turn this around this year as I don't believe there is a dominate team on the NFC we can't beat if we can figure out how to stop someones offense.
Ok, I'm 51 and have been a Cowboys fan for about 35 years and grew up in Corpus Christi when they played the Packers in the Ice bowl. I buy Cowboys jerseys, Cowboys Clocks, Hell, I've even got part of astro turf from Texas statium in my office. I care about this team a lot and spend money on the Cowboys. Heck, I've even been to training camp. You can't be more devoted then me as I bleed Cowboy blue, so lets find a answer.
