Is it wise to give Dez a contract?

I was thinking about this yesterday during the game. Talent wise, he's worth it, but the dude is always getting dinged up. He's a good WR, but where this team is at right now, does giving Dez a boat load of $$ a wise investment?

Will keeping Dez put this team over the top?

With our defense needing to replace all 11 players, I wouldn't give another 100 million to an offense player. Especially having to cut/eat Romo's contract in next 2 years (my guess)

I don't think he's overrated but I think elite WR's are overrated in their importance on title contending teams.

The problem we run into is...if you don't resign Dez...and you don't resign Murray....and Romo tanks Schaub style...we're looking at trying to draft a new trio in one offseason.

That's just scary to think about

I have a much different approach. To me the question is not if the player is a good one and deserves to be paid like the other top players.
To me the question is how much does it effect my football team to have a player like him compared to the investement i made in him. Again: regardless of position or the players ability.

In the years i followed the NFL and decissions by GMs/trainers etc. my conclusion is: You dont pay big bucks to any player. You did that in the times before the CBA and everything. But it is not the way to win in the NFL these days.

There are position you can argue: Passrusher, OLT, QB. Everything else imo is out of question. You dont need a franchise WR, TE or RB to win in this league.

Having alot of good starters and solid backups is much more valuable then having 2-3 franchise players. Because for the later you sacrifice too much else.

That does not work if you have the wrong draft strategy (our main problem imo).

In the end i would try to trade Dez or let him walk at the end of his rookie contract if he is not willing to accept a mid range contract (which he def. will not). I'd build my receving corps throu the draft and solid-2-good FAs who are in the age to get their second contract.

So short answer: No. And it has nothing to do with how good Dez is.

No reason why we can't give him an extension and make it work. Particularly since we'll need a new QB and it will likely be a low paid QB on his rookie contract. And apparently the NFLPA was upset with Tyron taking the contract because it was low offer according to the NFLPA.

Witten will also be off the books soon as well. The same with Carr and possibly Sean Lee.

Lots of money to be freed up.

I would rather take the proven player that actually produces consistently that is under 30 years old than hope we can find the right player in the draft.

Will keeping Dez put this team over the top? No. Will letting Dez walk open up a glaring hole we would be praying to fill? Yes.

Particularly in the event there is a new man under center anytime soon, we need Dez here to ease that transition. Anyone willing to let Dez walk is absolutely out of their damn mind.

You would trade Dez for 2 first's (but Jerry is not on the other side), so take first and third if we can get

Bingo.

Think about this - Does anyone trust Jones and co to find a replacement that could come close to what Dez gives us?

Nope. To me, even a top 5 receiver isn't worth the cost. Even the very best receivers just aren't capable of taking control of games. Save the money for talent needed elsewhere. I like the guy, but even Calvin Johnson isn't winning Super Bowls for Detroit.

I love Dez, but if we could get 1st 2nd and a following 2nd I would move him to another team. Not because he is not worth it, but because a WR isn't that valuable of an asset to us. We need to draft another QB and do a run first offense and smash mouth defense.

I dont think its thats scary.

We have a good set of WRs right now even without Dez.
We have good RBs even without Murry. And you can always find good RBs in the 3rd or 4th round of the draft. Its not like our running game would suffer alot without Murray. Good running comes with a dominant OL. And we have one.

If Romo is what i think he is right now then we need a good QB for sure. But we knew that would happen sooner or later.
So we need to take a much more serious approch at developing QBs (just look at Parcells and how many years he was willing to put in the development of Romo). An area that has concerned me for years.

We would be better off trading him for picks if we could hit on defensive players in the draft.

Unless we could trade him straight up for 2 nfl defensive starters, including a fringe blue chipper like Dareus out of buffalo, it may not be worth it

Way too unproven to say that. Not a possession receiver among them.

Don't foregt about our TE. Our appoach is not to have a passing game only throu WRs.

So our possession Receivers to me are: Beasley, Witten and Escobar.

I don't know that many players wouldn't have been dinged up after that hit he took.
