Is it wise to give Dez a contract?

I would like for him to stay, but, we'll have a lot of money tied up among a handful of players on a .500 team or worse.

I think the FO will re-sign him. I wonder what offers they would get if they ask around the league.

I bet Tom Brady would love to throw to Dez.

I like Dez. I like his talent, but for the sake of my future sanity, keeping him will not do this franchise any favors in their quest for that elusive 6th trophy.

Wow, one game and everyone is already on the trade Dez for picks train? Dez isn't and shouldn't go anywhere, he is our most talented player by FAR. Not to mention, anyone watching the game yesterday would notice that when we were down 14-3 he was on the sidelines trying to fire up the team, his passion for the game and talent are not found in one player often, you don't let someone like that go. He will die to win. That's what this team needs. The mediocrity has already settled in on witten and romo we need a player there to fire them up too. Not only would I re-sign him, I would slap a C on his chest and let him lead the offense in the huddle.

Can't speak for anyone else but considering not signing and trading Dez is what I believe a good front office should do with every player. Fans can get emotionally invested in players but I think its the kiss of death if the people running a team are doing this.

I think a good hard look at what assets could be obtained as well as what could be purchased via free agency with the cap money that he would consume is a critical skill for any front office.

Its a tough analysis that would have to consider a myriad of factors but if at the end of the day keeping Dez is say only 10% better than alternative approaches that maintain flexibility and leverage then I give up the former to keep more of the latter.

I highly doubt any serious consideration is being given to not signing Dez, he's the type of player that jerri loves to throw money at regardless of the ramifications & risks.

I love the kid, part of me thinks he deserves better than staying in D

If I don't want to commit long term and I don't want to trade him, I'd also seriously consider franchising him next season and maybe the season after subject to how Tony is holding up. This would likely be a higher short term cap hit but would give them tremendous flexibility and leverage for the next two years & thereafter while also minimizing the cap hit in the long run should he get injured or other organizational factors render Dez an unnecessary luxury

Flexibility & leverage are highly underutilized by this org imo

Its funny that this is even being discussed. I could understand if the guy was 31 years old and wanted an 8 year contract. Let's stop acting like we could just replace a top 5 WR so easily. Dez opens up the rest of the offense for the players like Williams, just like Demarcus Ware helped Spencer have a probowl season. Remember what Mike Irvin did for Alvin Harper?

Sure we have holes. However any plan that involves getting rid of a player that is so dangerous that it forces the opposing teams to gameplan against him is just bad thinking. If he was Anquan Boldin maybe. He scares defenses. Thats not something you get rid of because it will net you a savings of 5 million per year. (net savings since you will need to pay another number 1 receiver to replace him).

Nope.

I've said it once and I'll say it again. Not worth it. Like you said, it's always something. Getting dinged up for all types of reasons. Storming off the field and so many people justified it.

What real impact has he made? Zero playoff appearances. Use that money to sure up the defense. And get some other younger, cheaper WRs in here.

Calvin is the best in the league hands down and he's only led the Lions to the playoffs one single time.

I was thinking about this yesterday during the game. Talent wise, he's worth it, but the dude is always getting dinged up. He's a good WR, but where this team is at right now, does giving Dez a boat load of $$ a wise investment?

Will keeping Dez put this team over the top?

I think he is one of the top 5 WRs in the game, but given where Dallas is at I think it would make more sense to trade him. This team is in a huge hole both financially and talent wise, Im not so sure it is wise to invest $100 million in a WR right now. He is one of my favorite players on the team, but it will be a bad investment in my opinion. I say will be because I dont think Jerry has the football sense to trade away a player as good or popular as Dez.

False. Why would you pay another #1 receiver to replace him? You don't get rid of Dez and then go and sign a #1 type receiver. You use that money and fix the major holes of this team.

Dez seems to escape a lot of blame on this whole era of mediocrity.

Funny, right? Tyron Smith getting hated on too. My oh my how quickly fans turn. It's quite disgusting if you ask me.

Growing up in the post dynasty era, I've suffered nothing but heartache and failure watching this team year in and year out. If Dez chose to walk away and sign with a better team who could blame him. But if they voluntarily trade Dez, that would likely be the end of me following this team. This team had many chances to cut bait with Romo and they rewarded him with a 100 million dollar payday, why should anyone else on this team not get what they deserved because of that choppa suit wearing monkey we have at QB?

Dez is one of the few players that I care about on the roster. Pay the man. The mistake was paying the man that throws the ball to him.

I know. I had to wait for the thread to get to page three before I was sure I wasn't getting pranked. Of course, it's all relative to the contract he signs, but he's a guy you do what you can to keep long-term.

So you sign a player like Pierre Garcon--------wait a minute he makes 7 million a year....

So instead you bring in scrubs that know that once they develop into a good player you will show them the door....

I am not feeling like this is the best way to build a team.....bizarre thread.

Scrubs? How about you draft someone young. No one said anything about scrubs.

I've never been a big proponent of breaking the bank for a WR anyways.

But that's me. And I don't run a team so my opinion means nothing in the end.
