Is it wise to give Dez a contract?

I have a much different approach. To me the question is not if the player is a good one and deserves to be paid like the other top players.
To me the question is how much does it effect my football team to have a player like him compared to the investement i made in him. Again: regardless of position or the players ability.

In the years i followed the NFL and decissions by GMs/trainers etc. my conclusion is: You dont pay big bucks to any player. You did that in the times before the CBA and everything. But it is not the way to win in the NFL these days.

There are position you can argue: Passrusher, OLT, QB. Everything else imo is out of question. You dont need a franchise WR, TE or RB to win in this league.

Having alot of good starters and solid backups is much more valuable then having 2-3 franchise players. Because for the later you sacrifice too much else.

That does not work if you have the wrong draft strategy (our main problem imo).

In the end i would try to trade Dez or let him walk at the end of his rookie contract if he is not willing to accept a mid range contract (which he def. will not). I'd build my receving corps throu the draft and solid-2-good FAs who are in the age to get their second contract.

So short answer: No. And it has nothing to do with how good Dez is.

If this team was on the brink of being good over the next couple of years and we needed him..

I'd say pay him.

But this team is so far away from even being competitive..

no.

You let him go and let him suck somebodies cap.

Not ours.

Keeping Dez means we keep Romo.

Both have to move on before the team improves.

First..

Garrett has to go.

Without that..nothing is going to improve.

I keep thinking back to the off-season where Jones said getting rid of Garrett means they would lose out on all the experience Garrett has gotten so far.

What an insane statement.

We need to lose this 'experience' of being losers.

Neither Dez nor Garrett nor Romo has been able to win.

I can do without these 'experiences'.

The sad truth is yes on an established team which we do not have. I would actually look to trade him and really START the rebuilding process. You would even be able to get something for Romo too if he could finish the entire season in one piece and return to his old self. Bottom line is this team should move on from Romo, the horrible draft picks as of late, and just start all over and Dez would give us some great return in a trade. The only thing this team has going for itself is a nice young offensive line.

QB Romo and nothing else
RB Murray at age 27-28 as a free agent......would you throw him a nice sized contract extension? I wouldn't...becasue where is it going to get you?
WR Dez only great value and a bunch of solid WRs
TE Witten slowing down big time and Escobar can't get in the game do to physical weaknesses
OL best part about this team and something to keep in place for 2-3 years. Maybe even get some high picks for Smith and his huge contract.
DL a complete MESS
LB just as big a MESS
DB Quite possibly the biggest MESS

Every year we cut guys, and every year, we're still sorry. We let our home grown Ware go to free up money, and... Keep Dez, change out the QB and let's go get in the hunt to win a SB. Oh yeah, and build a defensive line.

Let him go.

He is wasting his talent in Dallas.

One day he will wake and it will be over aka Romo and Witten.

I'd give Dez a contract too if:

- id believe were just him away from a championship
- id not sacrifice the future of my franchise with his contract. means i am well set with the salary cap and the structure of my players contracts for the coming years.

Just like Denver did this off season when they signed 3 new players to their defense.
But Denver was in the final last year and has invested in a QB whos end is coming fast.
we were 8-8 the last 3589734893274 years and constantly in cap hell.

So i agree with you on that point.

I think the Romo contract was one of the stupiest things in the last two decades this FO decided to sign.

But i disagree with you on Garett. I think he is a good HC and i for myself like what he did so far.
I never thought high of him as a coordinator. He was never good at it. But right now we assembled a good staff with marinelli, linehan & co. and i think the biggest reason for it is garrett.

It took him quite some time but to me the problems for that (and other things) are to be looked for somewhere else.
I think the main problem is JJ (and his son too).

The league is now cracking down on domestic violence way after the fact... i.e. Ray Rice. Dez hit his mom so were is the consistency? Don't pay him.

DUH. He's the best player on this team. They should make Dez the highest paid wide receiver ever.

I don't think he's overrated but I think elite WR's are overrated in their importance on title contending teams.

The problem we run into is...if you don't resign Dez...and you don't resign Murray....and Romo tanks Schaub style...we're looking at trying to draft a new trio in one offseason.

That's just scary to think about

you would be correct

The argument for letting good players walk it you're more than one player away is an argument for always being more than one player away.

He's a great player but the only time I can really remember a superstar WR making a huge difference in terms of getting the team to the Super Bowl was TO and the 2004 Eagles.

I'd rather have the 4-5 good players that we could have with the money he'll want rather than 1 great player.

I'd trade him for two 1st round picks . Get rid of this whole team including the coach .

Keep the OL get rid of everything else even witten . Dude is dependable but can't get open more than 10 yards down field .

He's the only thing to get excited about dallas has so I'd say yes.

This is the reason? So you can buy another 88 jersey? So you can watch one player all game? waiting for a great catch, fumble or disturbance of some sort? No

Maybe you need him. The team doesn't. Reread the posts above that I liked.

Hey I love dez but he's a drama queen already has back issues and is no AJ green or Megatron . We've got much bigger issues . What elite team has an 100 million dollar WR ? Have to start with a new head coach , qb , entire defense (maybe we could salvage a 5th rounder for Claiborne ) .

If the plan was not to re-sign him the time to trade him has passed. Franchising him is another option. I don't know if he is worth the money. Probably not for this team.

No this Is why they'll resign him. I dont buy cowboys stuff. I want to keep him but if dallas really wants to build a winning team (which they dont) they cant keep dez. But he is the only thing exciting about this team and one of the few 3 or 4 with passion on this team.
