Is it wise to give Dez a contract?

No this Is why they'll resign him. I dont buy cowboys stuff. I want to keep him but if dallas really wants to build a winning team (which they dont) they cant keep dez. But he is the only thing exciting about this team and one of the few 3 or 4 with passion on this team.

A lot of Dallas fans know that Dez is a solid WR but no way is he a team captain and certainly not worth his fan fame value (cap hit). You tell us that building a winning team does NOT include DB. I agree. Then you say he is the only exciting thing about this team. Hey like you I can get excited by a great play...but it's not just for 1 player. The team will turnover 20% or more each year and many players excite. Just seems many fans here on this site are stuck on the current #88. Ive been watching both our o and d lines improve just this 1st game. Ups and downs until it spikes! This year ain't over yet.

Growing up in the post dynasty era, I've suffered nothing but heartache and failure watching this team year in and year out. If Dez chose to walk away and sign with a better team who could blame him. But if they voluntarily trade Dez, that would likely be the end of me following this team. This team had many chances to cut bait with Romo and they rewarded him with a 100 million dollar payday, why should anyone else on this team not get what they deserved because of that choppa suit wearing monkey we have at QB?

Notice nobody else responded to this -- I'm embarrassed I did.

No Its not over but dallas isnt a superbowl contender and that's what im getting at. I dont believe they are building a team for the future d wise. I think jerry is just filling a roster. If were going to continue to be bad we might as well keep a player like dez.

don't let the door kick u in the back "spasms" on your way out. Classic Dez fan. Loves the player more than the team. Seems all too common around here don't it?

No team is going to give up two 1st's for a player in his last contract year. If this is a serious discussion at VR, then it should have happened over the Summer. It is too late now to get great value.

Now, what if Dallas tags him then trades? Are we still on the hook for franchise tag(cap wise) money as soon as he is traded(I think so)? That wouldn't be a smart move either.

At this point, their best option is to tag him at the end of 2014 which lets him play one more year. If he stays healthy this season and next, then extend him if all goes well. Lets say Dallas tags him and he gets injured pretty bad in 2015 and it looks like it is a career lingerer.......Dallas is only on the hook for that season and can move on if need be.

IMO, it is unwise to extend him now not knowing what Romo's future holds. The last thing this team needs is 3 $100M contracts(Smith, Dez and Romo) in which two may not make it to the end of said contract.

I just don't know, love Dez but we have been down this road before..........................

If I were him I wouldn't take it.

Seriously. I'd go to New England, and win a title easy.

This gang over here, just does not have it. We are like 3-5 years away. And will need a new QB in about 1-2 years. If not after this year. Let's not waste Dez's prime.

We need Dez, period.

We do.

The way the fans around here talk about the man, I hope he does leave or we trade him. I hope we get screwed and watch him and a real QB win it all. While we just sit here and watch in misery.

Should go to the Eagles and win, just to piss us off.

So we don't pay our best player who is deserving of a big contract and let him walk to save money to sign other players. What have any of you seen that proves Jerry will spend that saved money correctly. He'll waste the money some place else probably by out paying for some dude on his last leg in free agency.

Dez is the only one who deserves to get paid and people are like let's make him a free agent. No wonder Dallas is the laughing stock of the NFL.

Yeah let him go. He deserves better than this.

Sure, can we give him Tony's and start Dustin Vaughn? Kidding, but not TOTALLY.

We've already tried to do it the 'patriots way'. We invested in the O-line... did the two tight end thing, etc., but obviously we aren't getting Patriot results. Why? Because we don't have Belichick or Tom Brady. Patriots haven't won anything in a long time as well and I bet they actually had some decent receivers on the team instead of cheaping out and stockpiling all these draft picks. You can only ride Brady for so much longer as he gets up there in age.
