Is Leonard Davis that Good? If so, then why isn't AZ keeping him?

Ok, at the risk of sounding like Mickey Spagnola when he says "If Such-And-Such is so good, why isn’t his team keeping him", I do have the ask question regarding Leonard Davis. Why isn't AZ keeping him? AZ was a team last year that played poorly because many of its name players underachieved. But you would think they'd want to keep the good name players.

Leonard Davis has a big name, but is AZ parting with him because there's nothing behind that name? Or is it that AZ has a good up-and-coming player that they can pay/play less for? In that case I can see AZ being willing to part ways with Davis, even if he still “has it”. ut even then, the benefits I hear ot Dallas signing him is that he can play several positions. Well, to me that spells "backup", not starter. So what play starter money to someone who's better slated to provide depth at many spots off the pine?

On top of this, I hear he is headed to Washington, leaving Dallas without a contract, but that contract negotiations with Dallas are still ongoing. So basically, he’s going to Washington to force more money out of Jerry Jones. Why would Dallas even want ot deal with that overpayment for a player who is not a blue-chip starter and better positioned to be a backup?

EDIT: If anyone knows how well Davis faired in AZ, I would appreciate it if you could post those comments within this thread. Thanks!

They're not even negotiating with him, are they? I think not, suggesting they have already decided to move in another direction.

Denny Green knows offense and he couldn't coax an average line out of AZ's OL group.

Just to be fair to Leonard Davis, he only makes up 20% of the entire OL. It could be that he was holding his own but that others were bringing that unit down. I didn’t’ watch AZ close enough to know for sure, but these are the things I hope Dallas is looking into when evaluating a guy like Davis.

I liive in Ariizona and have heard news daily about this. Leonard Davis is not that good and has become very lazy. The Cards have 32Mil under the salary cap it is NOT about money with this player. The Cards told him to lok for a job elsewhere at least a week before free agency.

as a guard i think he's a solid player. don't like him as a ot. but a guy who can play both is valuable with injuries. the key is the cost. i don't think he's worth 7 mil a year, maybe 5

I think the cards were playing him at the wrong position. LT is a tough position for someone of his size who cant move that well. Going up against speed rushers is something this guy isn't exactly made for. However, move a 360 lb guy inside against DT's, and I think he would be more productive.

That’s exactly what I’m concerned about. If nhe comes in cheaper to mainly provide depth then I’m fine with the move because then he’d have more incentive to produce. But giving him big dollars – with a big bonus – on what will effectively be his last big contract5 in the NFL is bad because he would have no incentive to produce and no penalty for underachieving.

Pretty much sums up all you need to know.

When the cards drafted Leonard Davis they already had a LT, so they put him at guard. He played there for 3 years and played very well there and was considered there best player on their o-line(yeah it wasn't a very good one).

Once the other LT left in free agency they moved him there and he just did not have the quickness in pass protection. When it comes to mauling in the running game he is very good.

So now a new staff is in Arizona and they didn't like what he did at LT and didn't want to pay the franchise money to keep him and he definitely wants out of Arizona. Who would honestly want to play for that team unless they want to over pay you?

Whisenhunt made it pretty clear they didnt want him back

Russ grimm is there too, he knows a thing or two about OL...if he thought Davis was worth it, they'd be keeping him

You are correct he came to AZ he was a gaurd, then they eventually moved him to LT. I have watched this guy, he worked hard about 1 out of every 6 plays.

The cards OL was decimated by injuries and they tried to move him around once again; however the scrubs they had on the line were performing better. The cards are now without any current players on the roster at Big Birds position. Does that tell you anything??? I hope so

IT IS NOT A GOOD IDEA TO PAY HIM BIG MONEY BECASUE HE WILL NOT HAVE ANY INCENTIVES TO REMAIN COMPETITIVE...

its what they drafted him to be...a franchise LT

when he stunk there during his first offseason workouts, they moved him inside where he was average...they moved him back to LT and he stunk again
