Stephen Jones and the Cowboys seem to be following the FO approach of the highly respected Ozzie Newsome and the Baltimore Ravens. I applaud how the Cowboys are doing business.....long over due....

Just replace the name Ozzie Smith and the Ravens with Jones' and the Cowboys and it shows exactly how the Cowboys plan to build their team. About freaking time....

Ravens play the long game with compensatory picks
Posted by Michael David Smith on March 14, 2015, 11:53 AM EDT

Some teams use free agency to add expensive players and make instant upgrades to their rosters. In Baltimore they take a very different approach.

The Ravens focus on drafting well and retaining most of the good players they draft, but declining to get into bidding wars to keep their own players while also declining to spend a lot of money to attract players away from other teams. As a result, the Ravens are always among the league leaders in compensatory picks.

The NFL’s compensatory pick formula is complex and not released to the public, but the basics are that teams get compensatory picks in the following year’s draft if they lose more expensive players than they sign in free agency. The bigger the losses in free agency, the better the compensatory picks. That means the Ravens, who have already lost five free agents (receiver Torrey Smith, pass rusher Pernell McPhee, safety Darian Stewart, tight end Owen Daniels and quarterback Tyrod Taylor) and not signed any free agents away from other teams, will get a lot of compensatory picks next year.

This year’s compensatory picks haven’t been awarded yet, but the Ravens had an NFL-high four compensatory picks last year, and an NFL-high four compensatory picks the year before. The Ravens have received more compensatory picks than any other team since the NFL implemented compensatory picks in 1994 — even though the Ravens franchise didn’t exist for the first two years after compensatory picks began. Wisely gaming the system to garner the maximum amount of compensatory picks has been a hallmark of Ozzie Newsome’s tenure as the Ravens’ G.M.

It helps that Newsome is also smart about drafting players good enough to contribute when he uses those compensatory picks. Seven of the eight compensatory picks the Ravens have had in the last two years were spent on players who are still on the roster. It’s a lot easier to build roster depth when you’re consistently getting more draft picks than other teams, and consistently using those picks on players who are good enough to make your team.

So while it may look like the Ravens got worse during the first week of free agency, that’s short-term thinking. The Ravens are thinking about the long term, and about the players they’ll draft next year thanks to the players they lost this year.

To operate like this you have to win in the draft. Not so sure the Cowboys are capable of it, but the Cowboys actually get a lot of compensatory picks anyway.

I don't necessarily think it's a specific, or strict "model", so to speak. I just think it's learning from past mistakes and as a result implementing a new philosophy. We saw the Wade Philips years pay for age and seemingly coddle players. This current roster is built around youth and competition for playing time.

I think the Cowboys are still willing to fork out cash, but it's got to be the right player at the right age. Which in my opinion is the right thing to do.

They absolutely have to keep hitting on at least a few draft picks and/or undrafted free agents per year in order to build off of the success they had last year,

Well, it's hard not to see that they've gotten better at drafting recently, and the coaching hires have been good, but I'm not ready to say they're actually good at it and can build a team doing it. It's taken them many years to finally build a decent OL and they had to do it with first rounders. Add to that the fact that they couldn't build or maintain a decent defense simultaneously and you have to seriously question if they are "winning" in the draft.

Is the arrow pointing up? Yes.
Is the front office capable of building a complete team through the draft? I don't know about that, show me!

I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again

I know it sucks we havent done much in fa. But I hate this team with a passion but the stealers never do anything fa wise and they are a hell of a franchise. Our philosophy is changing and I love it!! Our defense was still terrible last year and we lost a lot if them which doesnt bother me. It needs a fullbrebuild. The defense success last year was mainly rod!!! he used to coach my boss that man is an animal.

This is the Dallas Cowboys now and how they run their business. They said before FA they were going to follow the plan put in place a couple of years ago. So there shouldn't have been any surprises last week. If they stesss you as much as it looks like they do, perhaps you should either accept that so you can calm down or consider changing teams to root for.

Other than the OL, the draft has been average to below average at best.

Disagree. It have been above average. And very good the past few years. Even though will need a few more years to really know or see it.
Every player drafted can't be a super star studded player. Though most fans think they should be.

Yeah! You take away our best drafted players and our overall draft was only average.

What the hell does that even mean?

It means everyone should get their first pick right. Especially when they have been no brainers. What you do after the first round is where you prove yourself.

Ok look at it :
2014: 4,5,6,7 horrible.
2013: 2,4,5,6 horrible
2012: 1,3,4,5,6,7 horrible
2011: 3,5,6,,7 horrible
2010: 3,4,5,6,7 horrible

These aren't even the average picks. These are the horrible ones. We average one good pick a year. That's not how you get the job done!!! That's how you have one good season every ten years. I expect way more!!!
