NEW YORK Mar 13, 2006 (AP)— Isaac Hayes has quit "South Park," where he voices Chef, saying he can no longer stomach its take on religion.

Hayes, who has played the ladies' man/school cook in the animated Comedy Central satire since 1997, said in a statement Monday that he feels a line has been crossed.

"There is a place in this world for satire, but there is a time when satire ends and intolerance and bigotry towards religious beliefs of others begins," the 63-year-old soul singer and outspoken Scientologist said.

"Religious beliefs are sacred to people, and at all times should be respected and honored," he continued. "As a civil rights activist of the past 40 years, I cannot support a show that disrespects those beliefs and practices."

"South Park" co-creator Matt Stone responded sharply in an interview with The Associated Press Monday, saying, "This is 100 percent having to do with his faith of Scientology… He has no problem and he's cashed plenty of checks with our show making fun of Christians."

Last November, "South Park" targeted the Church of Scientology and its celebrity followers, including actors Tom Cruise and John Travolta, in a top-rated episode called "Trapped in the Closet." In the episode, Stan, one of the show's four mischievous fourth graders, is hailed as a reluctant savior by Scientology leaders, while a cartoon Cruise locks himself in a closet and won't come out.

Stone told The AP he and co-creator Trey Parker "never heard a peep out of Isaac in any way until we did Scientology. He wants a different standard for religions other than his own, and to me, that is where intolerance and bigotry begin."

Isaac Hayes is an idiot.

Every week, that show is a satire on some current event, politician, religion, movie, celebrity, if ya haven't been made fun of by Southpark, then you just haven't made it yet.

I've seen entire episodes dedicated to making fun of Mormons, Catholics, and other religions. But it just now bothers Hayes?

I'll tell ya what happened. The Church of Scientology is run like a mafia. Someone in that cult, I mean religion, pressured Hayes to quit.

That is exactly what I was thinking.

Dumbest thing Hayes could do. I wouldn't put it past Parker and Stone to make attacking Scientology a weekly feature on the show now. Their goal in life is to upset people....they just found someone it's working on.

I gotta say I saw this coming from the very night I watched that episode... which was funny as hell by the way!

Oh well, Chef was a riot in the early seasons, but they really don't use him or need him much any more.

It'd be funny if they killed his character off and replaced him with Barry White.

I like the Barry White idea! :lmao2:

Honestly, I thought the show was getting a little stale. I think the best episode this season was the Terry Schiavo/Golden PSP episode.

Maybe Chef's departure will give them some fun ideas to bring back more of the magic. :)

Well... Barry White would have to lend his voice from the grave...

That would be classic!

Issac Hayes is such a hypocrite. Eventually as long as Matt and Trey are alive they will make fun of every stereotype and every religion no matter the crap they take. Most of the viewers understand where the rip is coming from and identify with it and it is funny to the audience. Yet, Issac Hayes goes and helps make fun of Christians and even racism, yet Matt and Trey make a show that actually depicts the way TCOS is run and IH flips out and quits. If I were Matt and Trey I would find a way to chew him up and spit him out.
