Issues that will determine the Commanders game

I'm glad to hear about the turmoil among Commanders fans, and especially over at Extremeskins...that is heartwarming, especially for a guy who lives in Richmond, VA. However, what fans think means nothing come Sunday. The fact was proven in preseason...Brunnell outplayed Ramsey by a ton, and I, for one, was actually surprised at how loyal Gibbs was to his word with Ramsey despite his preseason struggles. This decision wasn't made based on his 3 offensive series Sunday, though he did have at least 2 turnovers in that time. It was probably watching the game film and seeing that what transpired in preseason was continuing.

I saw most of the Commanders' preseason games (by default, living in Commanders country), and I can tell you that Brunnell not only looked like he had his young legs again, moving quickly around in the pocket and even taking off running for the occasional first down, but he had all the arm one needs...he had plenty of zip on the ball on the deep outs and skinny posts, but he also had something Ramsey didn't...touch when needed.

I don't fear him, but those who disrespect him may be in for a surprise...imo, this is a definite upgrade to a veteran who has won before...not entirely unlike our resurrecting Drew Bledsoe, folks.

Here are the issues I am most concerned about in this game, in no particular order:

1. Our special teams coverage units, both kickoff and punt...the skins love their speedy return guy, and while good coverage nullifies his effectiveness, we'd better not give him the huge opportunities to speed up the field untouched like we did last Sunday with Sproiles...we mustn't lose the battle for field position on special teams, because I don't expect our units to do much in our own return game...if I'm wrong, it would be a pleasant surprise.

2. Our LB's are not very big or very good...The Skins had a great day rushing the ball against a very stout defense in Chicago. They are better up front than in the past, and Portis has gained 20 lbs of muscle since last season...wow! He's got some serious arms and seemed to actually be seeking out contact on Sunday, almost always moving forward....I like that if we get Roy on him...hehehe...but not our Inside backers who do a great job of dragging guys down, but not a good job of stopping guys in their tracks.

Our biggest weakness last week was off the corner...the 3-4 counts on the OLB and the CB/S to stop that play...it's way too easy to trap the DE inside. Ware killed us off the corner on Sunday...Ogbogu did a better job with outside leverage on one play I saw him, and Ware got better, but when the Skins run that damned "counter-tre" and pull their OG and OT to lead off-tackle, I'm sure hoping they are running it strong-side towards Roy and not weak-side where we could be counting on our OLB/CB to stop that play.

3. On offense, I expect us to move the ball effectively IF we handle the constant blitzes...Arrington and Washington may be two of the better passrushing LB's in the league, and Williams then surprises you with the Safety and even the Corner blitz.

4. What will they do with Shaun Taylor? If they use him to help in the deep patrol, I think this will be a good game for Witten, who can't be covered by their SS or LB's, imo. If they use Taylor on Witten, I think Crayton has another huge game in the slot.

5. We have to run the ball effectively...that is a must this week, imo. The Commanders live defensively off the big plays, blitzing against the pass and the run...they are not a "bend-but-don't-break" defense (that's actually more our philosophy)...If we can run JJ inside against their new MLB, that will bode very well for our offense.

On paper, our defenses are probably pretty equal...theirs is proven...ours is developing, but looked good for 1 game. Our offense should win this game if Bledsoe and company continue to protect the football and not give the Skins any short fields on which to score. I think some of you will really be surprised by Portis' newfound toughness and muscle...he's a dangerous "go the distance" guy, but there's no way they beat us through the air.

6. We must get pressure on the QB, especially on 3rd down. We may have kept our DL fresh last week, but Brees lit us up on 3rd down...The skins are very good in pass protection...as always, 3rd down will be a key for the success of our defense.

I pick the Cowboys over the Commanders by at least 10 points...I'm very confident based on what I saw in both games last Sunday. However, as we all know with professional football, teams seldom look the same two weeks in a row in this league. We cannot give the Commanders field position due to special teams play or turnovers....this game should be in the bag, but I don't believe for a second that it is....This game could just as easily turn into a real BATTLE, imo.

With the "Triplets" being inducted into the Ring of Honor, the stadium will be JUICED! Now way the Cowboys don't put an *** whoopin of EPIC proportions on the Skins Monday night!

The stadium may be jumping for the triplets...ummm...if that's possible...compared to other stadiums, it's actually very rare to ever see our stadium jumping enough to impact the game...I'd love to see that.

On the other hand, I'd be happier if the former stars weren't going in on Commanders day...

worse case possibilities, realistic?

For us, all the hoopla could be a slight distraction for a young team.

For the Commanders? If you don't think they get huge incentive from this "special" day, you're missing a big point...those guys are going to play their guts out to ruin this day for the Cowboys...you can count on that being their rallying cry in the locker room.

I'd like nothing better than to see us jump out to a lead early and keep our foot on their Red throats.

Waybe as always excellent post. I can't find a thing I disagree with.

Another test for our run D and we must keep someone in Brunnell's face all night. I think Ware learned a few lessons last week and will be much more effective against the run and in coverage.

Our OL will be tested with the blitz....you can put that in the bank. However I think this O can and will finally burn someone on the blitz.

I didn't pay too much attention to the Commanders preseason, but I would assume most of Brunnell's play was against the opponents' second team defenses. Most veteran qb's are smart enough to really light up second stringers, so maybe that was somewhat of an illusion.

Thanks CB...and man, I sure hope we burn someone...I want to see a long TD run or a long bomb for a score...and if it's deja vu to Crayton like last year, I'll love it, especially if it happens in the first quarter instead of the 4th.

Beat em down early...beat em down often...demoralize them....and don't let up.

If we let them stay in the game, it's going to be one of "those" finishes...

I'd love to think that, but he's a good QB who used to be great...he's not QC or Vinnie...like i said, no fear of him, but I respect him and what he can do if we don't put pressure on him consistantly...he'll read the defense correctly, find his guy, and get him the ball. ON 3rd down, we have got to bring pressure.

Great insight Wayne, perciate it.

I think we'll be fine with the run D. Like we proved with LT, forcing even great runners east-west mitigates their effectiveness. I think our DL does a good job stuffing the holes in the middle.

Its hard to be terribly concerned with the foreskins considering how many times we've beaten them WITHOUT a good team. But of course, this year I think we actually have something on the line this game. Playoffs are a minimum expectation this year, and with some improvement, a few wins there. Our division is going to be a lot more competitive this year also so divisional games matter all the more.

One thing is for certain, they better figure out who "some guy named Patrick Crayton" is.....

That would be the least desirous thing we could do.....let them hang around....Grab them by the uh, uh, face mask and not give them a chance to breathe. :D

Drew will take a three step drop and hit Crayton on a slant.........and he'll take it to the house.

Commanders defense is overrated.

Commanders offense is WAY overrated.

Commanders coaching is overrated.

Their stadium is overrated.

Their fans are overrated.

Basically everything about them is overrated. The way they are talking about the Bears game, you'd think they played the '85 Bears defense, not the crap defense they played on Sunday.

Hard for them to admit that their offense couldn't score a touchdown on USC let alone a NFL franchise! :laugh2:

We grab them by the throat, dangle them in the air and throw them through the hole in our roof!

Cowboys 45
Commanders 3

Portis was actually contained in the first half. The Bears had something like 3 first down in the first half, so their D was on the field alot.

The got worn out later in the game.

While Brunell looked better then Ramsey and took care of the ball, he did not look great and his stats were sub par.

It is hard in week 1 to know if the skins D is that good or the Bears O is that bad. Based on last year I am giving them the benefit of the doubt.

I think it will be key that we block their blitz's. If we do that we should have some success, if we don't we will have trouble all day.

That's why I'm here! To make people feel goooooooood!

Washington is doomed! DOOMED! Their season is over. Their franchise is finished! Gibbs won't last the season because when they reach the halfway point at 1-7 with a combined score of 30 points he'll throw up his hands and go back to NASCAR!

Get ready Washington! Get ready for a beat down at the hands of the greatest franchise of all time! THE DALLAS COWBOYS!

Good post Wayne. I never take any team lightly and I hope our boys don't take the Skins lightly either. That's a quick way to get your butt beat in this day and age of the NFL. We need to come out and play solid football and we need to win the turnover battle by at least +2.

I want to crush the Commanders and all their fans hopes for the rest of the season. We don't need to let up on them at any point in the game. I hope for a fast start as well. I'd like to be up by ten after the 1st quarter.

Is the speedy return guy the Skins love Antonio Brown?

If so, I think the romance has ended. Reports are they cut him.

Commanders | Betts to be Lead Kick Returner; Thrash Secondary
Tue, 13 Sep 2005 20:18:02 -0700

The Washington Post reports Washington Commanders RB Ladell Betts is expected to become the team's lead kick returner and WR James Thrash the secondary return man now that WR Antonio Brown has been released.

The only part of your post that sounds foolish and uninformed on your part is that their defense or their defensive coordinator is overrated...sheer folly, and you can't defend those statements in any way shape or form.

They had one of the best defenses in the NFC last year when everyone expected them to be down without Champ Bailey and Arrington...their DC is recognized by almost everyone I've seen on this board as a step above most.

They currently have the #1 defense after one week....the only thing the Bears were missing was a QB, and Kyle Orton actually played better than many guys around the league...they were solid on the OL and have a decent RB and a great rookie in Cedric Benson, yet the Skins held them in a close game, when the running game mattered most to both teams, to 41 yards on the ground...that's crazy, my friend.

The Skins offense, despite having QB problems and passing problems and not scoring a TD, rushed for 190 yards against a very good Bears defense run by coach Lovie Smith.

WE should beat the skins, but to call them overrated on defense is silly, and while I do think Gibbs is way overrated for what he can bring to the current Skins, Mr. Williams is a great defensive coordinator that I's swap Zimmer for today...and I'm not down on Zimmer like some guys.
