Jerry said that Saturday was liable to be boring, perhaps even frustrating for us...

It was...

And Stephen hinted that the conventional wisdom about the Boys not using all 11 picks, instead doing some trade ups until they only had 8 or 9 picks might be wrong, and the Boys might use all 11 picks... then the Boys go out and trade down, and pick up one MORE pick...

So, let's review some of the other things they said, which a lot of us (including me) passed of as a smokescreen:

The Boys might not draft a QB this year...

The Boys probably wouldn't draft a WR too early...

The Boys would probably look for OL help...

I'd suggest that those clues might be more valid than some of the lies Jerry's fed us in the past... perhaps this year, they were trying to give us advance notice of their overall draft philosophy...

Another thing that Jerry hinted at was that pick 101 might be one that other teams would covet, so don't be surprised if that pick is involved in some kind of a trade...

There are several guys that will be drafted tomorrow who dropped to the second day because of college injuries and/or systems that didnt fit their skillset but who will make great NFL players. Examples of these players are:

Jasper Brinkley
Derrick Williams
Stephen McGee
Cornelius Ingram

I'm sure there are several more, but those are off the top of my head. Anyway, I'd bet almost anything that we come away with at least one or two future pro-bowlers tomorrow with our vast number of picks

It looks like you are right...but I'm still not getting it. It looks like we are going for quanity over quality. We are not a rebuilding franchise...we have good to great personnel almost across the board. It seems to me that we need to be going for quality at whtever position we can find it. But it looks like rather that we are taking a shotgun approach and will bring as many draftees to camp as we can and hope some of them stick.

Rather like ESPN journalism...throw a bunch of...err...stuff...against the wall and see what sticks.

So what you're saying is we're finally seeing a reverse smoke screen?:D

Truthfully, I'm not that frustrated with moving down for the reason most are. I'm willing to sit back and evaluate this thing a few years from now. I don't necessarily need instant gratification. Depending on how good our scouting is, maybe we convert this third and fourth rounder into a couple players who are each better than the guy taken with pick No. 51. Or maybe not. Either way, we won't know for a few years.

And this isn't even me going out on a limb. Look no further than Scandrick and Choice to see what a little scouting can do for ya.

With that said I am frustrated/worried in this sense: It makes no sense to use all our picks this year. We simply don't have that many available roster spots. Can, what, five or six or seven rookies reasonably make the team? It makes no sense to me to use all 11 or 12 picks this year. And my opinion on that won't really change no matter who we select.

Edit: Though I will agree with those frustrated about the trade on this issue: We clearly got raked on the deal. Even if we convert those two picks into future HOFers, Buffalo got a steal.

My point exactly.

Actually, you do get it...

When you're not impressed with the talent in a draft, going for a bunch of picks increases the chances you'll find a few players... that may indeed be the basic philosophy behind the Cowboys' draft this year...

Naw, Jerry's years of lying are now working to his advantage... he can now tell us the absolute truth, and none of us will believe him... ROTFLMAO...

I certainly didn't see this approach coming in advance, though...

I can believe that Jerry will be looking to get another pick in the 5th next year, ours went to Denver for Montrae Holland...

Why ? Because we didn't overpay for anybody in this draft ?

I think so, too. I also think we'll be jumping all over the board tomorrow, trading up and trading down to pick players when there's value instead of reaching.

Oh yeah, I was fuming at first too. I'll admit, mostly for selfish reasons. I wanted some instant gratification. I wanted to see a name. I wanted reason to cheer or jeer. Instead, I got a big fat nothing.

I'll also say that I don't think the approach really passes the "smell" test. It just seems weird.

But with those things said, the draft isn't about appeasing people today. It's about appeasing people three years from now. For if we picked some joker just for the sake of picking a guy and giving the fans a name to chew on, we'd be regretting the day three years from now.

I'm not convinced our approach was the best way to go. But I'm not naiive enough to think I know how it will pan out.

personally i dont think we need to do alot of jumping around, i think day 2 sets up perfectly for us, all we have to do is sit back and let the picks come to us.

I disagree. I think Adam's spot-on.

We have five (?) picks in the top two rounds tomorrow, but what if there's 18 players left on our board that we have graded significantly higher than the rest?

Maybe we stay put with our top pick, but bundle up two others to move back into the top 18 of tomorrow's day to pluck another premium player as per our board?

You risk too much just standing pat all day. Plus, standing pat all afternoon more likely lends itself to using all 12 picks. And I don't really see why we'd want to do that.

I'd rather get the players we want where we want them instead of just taking whatever falls to us or reaching for someone too high.
