Preseason is usually a mixed bag for fans. Ugly, boring football versus the excitement of seeing our team after many months. Toss in the chance to see the draft picks and young players battling for roster spots and it tilts the games into the still fun to watch category. This year preseason is taking on a much more enjoyable level for several reasons.
First off we have a new head coach, offensive and defensive coordinators so we are all looking forward to getting a first look...even if we'll undoubtedly see a more vanilla taste of what's to come...or will we? With the new schemes and coaches, we may just let a little more hang out than normal. Certainly we'll get a better idea than we did under the paranoid style of Bill Parcells.
For a team with very few starting jobs up for grabs, we still have several entertaining camp battles going on. Every back-up spot on the OL, #3 RB, FB, #3 TE, #3 QB and the WRs spots after the top 3 on offense. On defense we'll be paying close attention to back-up NT, all our young LBs looking for increased roles, FS, and the log jam at CB that is as big as the one at WR. Last but not least on special teams, who's returning punts, who's at gunner, who can pull ahead returning kickoffs, all the coverage teams, and of course kicker.
Of our starters we all want a look at Romo in the new offense and Ware turned loose in the new aggressive scheme on defense.
Getting excited yet?
I'm sure we all have our own what to watch list, but for me, I'm looking at things that will not only impact the roster this year, but also how we'll use those 2 first round picks next year. My list:
The young OTs, all of our RBs, Watkins, the young WRs and CBs.
It seems like forever since that slick football ended our hopes for number six on that cold and wet night in Seattle. So much has changed since that night. So much hope has replaced the pain of that loss, and I'm ready to begin that journey to that sixth Lombardi.
It is begining...even if it is just a meaningless preseason game...and I can't wait!
