If Dak Prescott falls again, can Joe Milton carry the Cowboys?

https://insidethestar.com/if-dak-prescott-falls-again-can-joe-milton-carry-the-cowboys

In three of the last five seasons, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott has failed to play a full season due to injuries.
He has suffered three separate leg injuries alone over those five campaigns.
I think probably moreso than Cooper Rush. He had the head for the game, but sub par arm and sub par athlete.

We could also run RPOs with Milton.

Someone else said it best here. You want Milton to be a bus driver more than anything.

No QB on the roster is taking this team or any team to a SB.

While i had hoped for more of a established, season vet backup ala Joe Flacco, Andy Dalton, Aiden O Connell, Marcus Mariota or Jacoby Brissett ,
I honestly admit that newly acquired Joe Milton is just to much of an unknown commodity to me at this very early point.

Just like the previous Trey Lance , it's really just a total wait & see with Milton,
i just haven't seen him near enuff as we have a Cooper Rush, to hope and be confident that he can orchestrate moving huis team, scoring minimal points,
and transform backup action into bus drive game manage wins, the lone starting game vs Bills were reportedly primary backups & 3rd stringers as Bills were reserving
starters and prepping for incoming playoffs.

i think it would be very helpful to a Milton if we had a Detroit Lions type dominant run game and difference maker at RB but there are way too many question marks and
unknowns at this time in that area. Ditto with our defense as well, that would have to step it up to keep us in games.

What's puzzlingly is a report that Cowboys actually was interested in returning & re-signing Rush back as backup, but was financially out-bid by Ravens,
Apparently the club had a specific price tag on rush, or else

He signed for $2 million. One year. There are incentives if he takes 50% of the snaps in a regular season win, more if he does the same in a playoff win. He gets $10,000 for every game he’s on the active roster. What does that tell you?

Chargers also signed Heinicke and are paying him more. But, Trance is mobile and has a powerful arm. In the metroplex that makes him a future Hall of Famer. How did Jerry let him get away?
Rush has a similar contract.

2yrs 6M

Both players make more if they play.

That’s how cheap Jerry is.

What’s funny to me is Milton is already way better than Trey Lance. And Milton is still a ways from being a QB capable of being a consistent NFL starter.

Doesn’t mean he can’t develop. But he has a long way to go.

Looking back on Milton’s career in college, he has always had a strong arm and is extremely athletic. But his accuracy has also always been a question. Part of his development is about him learning to not just bail the pocket and rely solely on his legs and making good decisions.
He can’t throw at NFL level like Lance or Rush.

From his NFL draft profile :

Weaknesses

  • Disturbing lack of placement and timing as a deep-ball passer.
  • Completed just 38.6 percent of his throws beyond 10 yards (per Pro Football Focus) in 2023.
  • Struggles with anticipatory throws, running receivers into collisions.
  • Telegraphs throws between the hashes, giving safeties an easy jump on the ball.
  • Desires to throw the ball through receivers rather than deliver with touch.
  • Inconsistent tying his feet to eyes and squaring to his targets.
  • Frequently forces moving targets to break stride to try to make the catch.

Before I answer this question, I'd like you to answer MY question first:

If you have to have brain surgery to save your life, and you only have these 3 options of who performs the surgery on you

1- a turtle
2- a toaster oven
3- a hotdog with mustard

Which are you going to chose to save your life?

Dak had a brilliant rookie season and there after was good enough to get a record deal. And the band played on

I have just a little more confidence in Milton than I had in Rush. I think Milton has a much higher ceiling and he hasn't reached it yet. Haven't seen enough of him to say he could "carry" the team though.

Rush filled in admirably, but had a noodle arm and barely averaged 140, 150 yards per game. Milton is a better athlete and has NFL level strength.

Probably just depends on the quality of defensive play. Honestly I think the the defense is going to have more of an outcome on the success of this team than either Dak or Milton would. Either QB thats in the game needs to be viewed as a bus driver that can take the occasional deep shop. Keep teams to under 20 points and this team is going to win a lot of games. Fall behind early and it'll be the same story that it has been the last few years.

I wouldn't say Dak is elite. But I believe he's a lil more than a bus driver.

How can a bus driver quarterback be a perennial top 10 quarterback when healthy, become an MVP candidate and an All-Pro?

Are there any other bus driver quarterbacks who are consistently placed in the top 10, became All Pro and a MVP candidate? I honestly can't think of any off the top, but do you know the names of other bus driver quarterbacks who've done these things Dak has done?

It was a clear goal of the offseason to find a backup QB that is without the slightest doubt worse than our starter.

Thats to not have a QB controversy especially when QB#1 will take his annual offtime.

To find a worse player is a tough task to ask for but not impossible. So hats off to our FO being able to make it done.

When you are finally convinced this FO has essentially no area of even being medicore in they surprise you. Then - others - who think bad about them would simply call it "luck".

You’re taking bus driver as a derogatory term when it really isn’t. By bus driver I just mean a QB who will play within the system, limit turnovers, and get your guys in position pre snap. For most championship teams that’s how you win. It’s typically just 2-3 games each year that a qb needs to be a hero. Team wins and losses typically come down to how well your defense plays and how well your offense can control the ball unless you have a QB on one of the extreme good/bad levels.

I would classify Eli Manning as a bus driver who rode his defense to two super bowls over Brady. I also think there is a reason the cowboys have won at the same rate with either dak or rush at QB in recent years….we tend to overrate the QB position. Build a good team and you’ll make the playoffs with an average qb. Build a bad team with an average QB and you’re typically picking top 10 in the draft.

Correct. Bus driver has become a negative term and it shouldn't be. Brady was mostly a bus driver QB, and there is nothing wrong w/ that.
