It's time to end Newman returning punts

If yesterday's hit on Newman wasn't a wake up call I don't know what will... I have thought for some time now that it's a mistake playing this guy on punt or kickoff returns because of the injury factor... Your allowing your starting playmaker at CB to take a free shot... What would have happened had Newman had a concussion or a serious injury... Our defense would take a major hit...

The Cowboys have to find someone next year in free agency period or use the draft... In the mean time we have several options... My 1st choice would be someone such as Marion Barber who granted is our #1 option for short yardage but we still have JJ as the go to guy... So put Barber back there because he is good as well at catching the ball... Crayton could be a option as well, good hands... But it's clear we miss Thompson...

Just end this madness before Newman gets seriously injured and our season in a nutshell would go with it...

I have been saying that from Day 1... you don't risk one of your best players in order for them to return punts...

Agreed. It's not like he's busting one every other return. No sense in risking injury.

If someone can do it better fine if not then I have no issue with Newman returning punts from time to time. I'm not for over protecting players they are trying to win ball games and you do so by putting your best out there.

Newman should've called fair catch on that play, but I get your points.

It paid off pretty well with Deion. I don't recall too many complaints back then .... (of course, we weren't exactly in the Bulletin Board era when Deion played for us)

Newman hasn't gotten to return to many. Either if by design or luck, he's fair caught most of his opportunities or the coverage has been good.

Newman still needs to be a spot returner. He made a bad decision by not fair catching the ball. That is correctable.

I think Newman also used some bad judgement on that return because he should have just let the ball bounce out of bounds...LOL!

I have never liked this, I can't imagine losing Newman on something like that.

If he is the best option at the time, then he should be the returner.

I know you must play your best players, but, damn...I would rather have another player fair catch the ball rather then risk losing one of the best players in the NFL!

When I saw that hit, I was thinking, "Oh no"! Then when he did not come back for a few series, I thought that maybe he got hurt real bad...luckly he did not...

If he was always close or many times close to breaking one its a consideration to use him. But he has not been anywhere near that good.
And he and Ware are the two players WE CANNOT AFFORD to lose on D.

It's rolling dice anytime you put a marquee player like TN back to return kicks. The more touches, the more chances he has to make a play...and it also cuts the other way. The more likely he is to take a serious injury. Not worth the risk, in my opinion, but Im not an NFL coach either.

and not that its his fault, there is nowhere to return it to. Get him out of there he is far too valuable to this defense and team to risk returning punts.
