I'm surprised that there aren't any threads on him yet. When Pryor made the long drive down that field that ended in J.J. Wilcox's interception, J.J. must have had 6 or 7 stops on that drive. Granted, it's not good when your safety gets a ton of tackles, but he was everywhere on that drive. Impressive!!

53 man roster is not a question. The question is can he start at safety this season? And is he our safety for the next decade?

On the Raiders 40 yard gain to Butler, he took a HORRENDOUS angle and missed the WR, Butler than added another 20 yards or so after that.

He had good moments and bad moments. I feel there were a couple of times he was late and left the middle wide open. He's going to be inconsistent like this.

Much better than last week. He looked more confident.

Yea he's a risk taker but he's young. He'll start making smarter decisions. He's gonna lose on a few risky angles and he's also gonna make big INTs. The good news is he's all over the field making tackles on a consistent basis. He'll get smarter about taking risks.

Wilcox looks like he will be a player but he also looks like it will be next year.

This year he is a ST guy at most imho.

He played well. Overall I was disappointed in the angles and open field tackling of our corners and safeties.

Couldn't have been as bad as Webb's attempt to tackle on that play, someone needs to tell Webb the NFL stands for Not For Long when you try to tackle like that.

He looks raw, but actually made plays out there. That interception was impressive. It's clear that he still has learning to do, but I can see the potential in the guy.

At times, Wilcox plays very well and at other times, he plays poorly. He won't likely earn a starting role until he finds a way to become more consistent. I think those who've stated he's not ready yet may find they're correct.

This is exactly what I expect from him. He should improve by light years in 12 months.

You're probably right, but I'm too excited/impatient to wait a whole year to see Wilcox play to his potential. Especially considering we might not have any good starting safeties this year.

1. Wilcox has potential to be our safety for the next 10 years. But he has some learning to do. He'll probably play special teams.

2. Johnson is probably more NFL-ready than Wilcox because he's played safety a lot longer. But he is the most fragile player I've ever seen. He can't be counted on.

3. Church will be our starter but none of us have ever really seen him play. He won the starting job last offseason and got injured the first game. We don't know what we have in him.

4. Allen is career backup. Fans liked him in Pittsburgh but he's never possessed and never will possess starting safety talent. And he'll probably be our starting safety.

5. McCray doesn't deserve to be on this team.

Everybody is worried about signing a veteran RG. I'd be more worried about signing a safety or two.

Watching my taping of the game. When was the last time we had a safety make this many solo tackles - this inexperienced kid is a solid tackler. YES, he needs seasoning and time to figure out the passing game and to figure out the right angles at this faster NFL level, but holy cow, he's a good tackler and athletic and isn't passive or chicken, and this is a huge upgrade from Sensabaugh - who got into the play so late he usually stood there staring down at the pile! Wilcox looks to me like he has a HUGE upside - he is RAW and already super active and around the ball. Give the kid a chance.......
2nd round pick Escobar doesn't show me much at all, in comparison, Wilcox shows starter potential - yeah it might take a year or two, but so what......This is a talented athlete and a hitter/player - he just needs to clean it up.....

Yeah, I see a started for the next 10 years. I'm excited. It's too bad he probably won't be ready for a year or two. But considering the other safeties on our roster, I wouldn't be surprised if he starts this season.

Wilcox looked like every bit of a tremendous athlete who is learning a new position. Different level of competition from his small school, so you know the growing pains are going to be there.

But you saw those instances where he would come up and make a good openfield tackle, like the one on Pryor's first read option play. And the INT was a great play as well.

As I said in another thread, no one should expect greatness from these young guys. But you just want to see these moments when they flash the potential they have to show you what they could be in time.

Wilcox is by far my second favorite draft pick. I didn't like the pick at first because I thought there were more NFL-ready safeties available when we drafted him. But I think he'll be a stud. Maybe the best safety in his class when it's all said and done.

There wasn't a question of him making the team however there is a debate if he can start this year or the following.
