Congratulations, DeSean Jackson. America has finally found someone more deplorable than Terrell Owens. In one of the oddest and dumbest plays you’ll ever see in the NFL, Jackson caught what seemed to be a 61-yard touchdown pass from Donovan McNabb in the second quarter of the Cowboys’ 41-37 win over the Eagles on Monday Night Football. Jackson, however, felt the need to celebrate, the need to gloat, the need to show that he was the man.

That’s fine. I understand that in today’s NFL it’s not just enough to do your job well; you have to rub it in everyone’s face that you actually deserve to cash in your paycheck that week. The problem was Jackson celebrated by flipping the ball behind him, not in the end zone, not out of the end zone, but just before reaching the end zone. While the play was actually called a touchdown, it was later ruled that Jackson tossed the ball behind him before crossing the goal line. And, since no Cowboy defender recovered it and the play was ruled dead after the touchdown, the Eagles were given the ball at the Dallas 1. Some would say Jackson was vindicated one play later when Brian Westbrook punched it in from one yard out -- but not in my book.

Despite becoming only the second rookie ever -- and first since Don Looney in 1940 -- to begin his career with back-to-back 100-yard games, Jackson still has a lot to learn. Remember: This is the same player who, as a high school senior playing in the 2005 U.S. Army All-American Bowl, caught what appeared to be a wide-open touchdown pass and felt the need to somersault into end zone but fell a yard short and fumbled the ball at the one-yard line. Much like he was on Monday, Jackson was vindicated that night, being named the game’s MVP despite the highlight-reel gaffe.

The play might be nothing more than a side note to a classic Monday Night Football game, but I think it says a lot about the mindset of today’s player, where the need to celebrate is almost as great as the need to succeed. In fact, in Jackson’s case, sometimes the celebration comes before the touchdown. Say what you want about Owens, but at least his celebration -- stretching his body over the goal line after his 72-yard touchdown catch as if he was a sprinter edging Usain Bolt -- came after he scored. Maybe Jackson should take a page from T.O.'s celebration book, imagine the goal line as a finish line and cross it before he celebrates next time.

Kornheiser apologizes

Towards the end of the Cowboys-Eagles game, as ESPN's Mike Tirico was referencing Hispanic Heritage Month, Tony Kornhesier apologized for comments he had made earlier in the game, saying, “On that subject, I said something before I shouldn’t have said, I apologize for it. Not my first mistake, undoubtedly won’t be my last, but a 100 percent apology.”

While Kornheiser never referenced what he said, the comment that stuck out to me as being most offensive came after Felix Jones scored on a 98-yard kickoff return and ESPN replayed the play again with the Spanish play-by-play call. After the play, Kornheiser said, “I took high-school Spanish and that either means nobody is going to touch him or could you pick up my dry cleaning in the morning.”

What did you think of Kornhesier’s comments and apology? Should he be disciplined any further?
