With so many needs on this club. Why waste a pick or free agent money on a position that most teams put no value in? This kid really stepped up at the end of the season. I would like to see if he can handle the job. Thoughts?

would be nice if it works out, but i would feel much more comfortable with a guy who has played there before, rather than a guy who hasnt even started consistently at a position he has already played

Just because he can play corner on 3rd down doesn't make him a quality safety. They need to find a proven comodity. Either a free agent like Corey Chavous or a day one draft pick.

why would this be different from running strong safeties out there to play FS?

How many games do you think the boys would of won if somebody was back there with some decent coverage ability?

I like Jacques Reeves I just hope hes back here again next season whatever position hes playing. Putting him at FS might be worth a shot I suppose. If it doesnt work than we can always move him back to the corner.

i see your point, but its different

a safety still has the same role pretty much...corner would have to learn all new role

A FS has to roam over a lot more territory and make the proper decisions by knowing which guy to help in coverage and when its a run play. Totally different skills from a corner. There is no reason to expect a cover guy to be a quality FS.

I think both of thesea re bad ideas. We need a real FS not a SS or a nickel corner or anything like that.

Exactly, should be able to read on the fly and make the adjustment instantly. Much like a good MLB (see Dat). That is what makes Corey an interesting option as a FA.

The starting free safeties in this years Pro Bowl according to NFL.com:

John Lynch
Bob Sanders
Darren Sharper

Have one thing in common. They were DB's in College who got moved to FS.

I wouldn't move him. He looks like a future cornerback. Glenn doesn't got many years left. 3rd CB is just as important as FS. You might end up creating two holes.

That's very true. A 3rd corner is on the field a whole lot now days and if he didn't pan out at FS, you would indeed be weakening two spots.

However, Reeves might be a very good FS. We know he has the coverage ability and he could fill the spot real nicely if he could handle the physical and mental aspects of FS.

I say give him a try in mini-camps and early in training camp.

I agree. But an injury to Henry, Glenn, or Newman would leave us without a 3rd corner. I should have said you need 4 CBs in the NFL nowadays. What if Reeves gets hurt making repeated tackles that are required from the safety position. He is not as physical as Keith Davis. Then we would lose our emergency CB in Reeves.

On what,, hes got youth on his side, I'll give you that.

Just bustin on ya,, I think Beriault looked like a steal when I saw him early on in camp,, would be nice to find another ST/DB type, that can be a force at both positions.

Reeves has been as nice a find on the defensive side of the ball as Clayton has been on the offensive side.

He seems to have taken a stride in his man coverage skills,, he had shown up on 3 or 4 nice plays the past two weeks.

I could see Reeves giving Glenn a push early next season.
