Jaelan Phillips traded to Eagles

I don’t why’d they call him a “bust.”

His primary issue has been health. He hasn’t played in double digit games since 2022.

That said, he’s averaged ~0.5 sack per game for his career which is very good for a DE.
Hes not on the field 100% of the time due to health though.

No it's not. The formula is based on the contract these guys sign with their next team. Those contracts haven't been signed so the data is not finalized. The framework is set but the specific compensation levels that determine the ultimate return doesn't happen until after the season is over.

Top of the market = 3rd round pick

They will likely get a 4th.
And top 10% in the league is what it would take for a 4th round pick.

They will not get a 4th.

Fantasy? So it's a fantasy to say this is a low risk signing?
The fantasy is in your deeply flawed comp pick formula. That’s not happening.

Your best bet is he’s a great fit, stats healthy and produces and you extend him.

If that happens, it’s well worth it.

This is a bit different. This huybactually medically retired in college while at UCLA.

What does that have to do with anything as a pro? That had to do with concussions back then.

He’s had a torn ACL and an Achilles in his time in the NFL. He’s back this season and playing well.

This is not the type of player Jerry would trade for because Jerry knows the fans and media have been railing against the defense and he also knows that if he were to have traded for Phillips, most fans would have said, "Who?" regardless of his past performance.

If Jerry's going to trade for defensive help, it's going to be for players with names that many will recognize so he can get praised for it and, more importantly, get to talk about it constantly with the media.

I never understand why they don't do more low-round trading at the deadline, especially when you need multiple players, not just one or two.

There are a lot of solid (not star, but solid) players out there that would be upgrades for the Cowboys and they could get those guys for 5th, 6th and 7th round picks and that would likely include also getting back a lower round pick in return.

This is the perfect time for a team with a lot of salary cap space to upgrade several positions instead of trading high picks for one or two brand-name players.

There are a lot of solid players on bad teams who teams would like to get off their books or get something in return before losing them in 2026.

Thats not normal to start with. The fact that hes been injuired constantly in the NFL dosent help either.

Let’s hope they do something between now and tomorrow. If not, I don’t know what to think.

Watched Philips in Miami, not too upset at "missing" out on him.
Don't think he's been the same player since the Achilles. Maybe going to the Eagles will refresh him, but don't think it's a slam dunk trade for them
He also has concussion issues.

It’s a higher price than I would be willing to pay for a half season rental.

I’m glad it isn’t Dallas paying that price.
I agree Stash, I would NOT have traded our 3rd rounder for him.

The thing about it from the Eagles perspective is they had 3 3rd rounders next year, so they still have 2 left.
1 in the Jets pick, which is likely at the beginning of Round 3, and they will likely be getting a comp 3rd for Milton Williams, so for them, in their position, I think it's a win. If he excels, they have a chance to lock him up, and if they do lose him, they will likely get a comp pick for him. So say they lose him, they could get a 4th round comp pick in 2027. I suspected they would move some draft capital from 2026 to 2027 anyways, as no way they have room for 7 picks in the first 4 rounds next year (which is what they have).
They also got the Fins to pay most of his salary this year, so the $ cost is negligible for them. Just an example of how good a GM Howie is.

I very much agree. If I’m in the Eagles’ circumstances?

It definitely makes sense. And that’s not even mentioning Phillips’ relationship with Fangio, that’s another key factor in all of it.

But given Dallas’s needs and circumstances, it makes far less sense.

The two are not equal.

Stash is right. If Dallas traded a 3rd for 8 games the Zone would be ridiculing the FO for years.
Not if the Cowboys were defending SB champs and looking pretty good for a repeat. I'd be good with it big time and so would the naysayers. You guys have to consider the circumstances.

Yes I totally agree.
Would have been a mistake for us, as we are going no where fast, but for a team with SB aspirations, a need at the position, and an abundance of draft capital, I think it was a great move for them.
I hope we don't make a trade. we need to keep our picks and regroup in the off-season, develop a plan and execute it.

Yeah, it probably only makes sense for a contender. Also they are giving up a low 3rd and will probably get at least a 4th comp pick back when he leaves.
