Running back Greg Jones of the Jaguars will be sidelined for the season with a torn ACL for the second time in the last five years.
He suffered the injury Saturday night against Tampa Bay, and the Jaguars first reported it was a sprained MCL and he might be back for the season opener. But an MRI revealed it was actually a torn ACL on his left knee that will require surgery.
He suffered a similar injury on his right knee in his junior year at Florida State on his right knee so when he returns next year he'll be playing with two reconstructed knees.
Jones was just starting to regain the form he had last year before he suffered the injury. His first two years with the Jaguars, he had been a fullback and short yardage runner, but he seemed on the way to becoming a breakaway threat again this year.
With Jones out, Derrick Wimbush will likely become the fullback with Fred Taylor remaining their lead runner. Jones had been expected to share time with Taylor this year.
The Jaguars also released receivers Troy Edwards and Felton Huggins and kicker Seth Marler. Edwards re-signed with the Jaguars in May from Detroit and Marler was re-signed by the team in training camp after starting kicker Josh Scobee went down with an injury.
