From Yahoo Sports about Potential Free Agent Landing spots:

Free safety Jairus Byrd -- Ballhawking center-field safety. Averages 4.4 interceptions and 2.2 forced fumbles per season. Turned 27 in October. Repped by Eugene Parker, infamous for driving hard bargain. Held out of most of 2013 camp, then missed first five games with plantar fasciitis. Otherwise durable. Commanders have major cash to spend and major need at safety. Bills SS Aaron Williams' $26 million extension all but ensures Byrd will leave Buffalo.

Free Agent Forecast: Commanders on five-year, $40 million deal.

NFLN ripped him for lack of top end speed this morning. They did not mention the Cowboys (while I was watching) as a possible landing spot.

I don't think hes in our forecast but we have been looking at Pee Wee Herman for Free Safety due to his closing speed !!!

I wonder what Ward will fetch (pass on 8 per)? If hes anywhere in that 5 range, he would fit even as a more prototypical SS with speed to cover new age TEs n scat backs.

We've invested a lot of draft picks into the safety position, it's time to let that play out, not add another top heavy contract to the roster.

I saw another article recently highlighting the lack of top end speed, but that he makes up for it with instinct & knowledge and often baits & cheats, and is seldom wrong...

We've been letting that pan out for about 15 years now. It hasn't worked. Go get the best one we can afford. It's the most important position on the Defense, and we don't give a crap about it!!! Probably in the the top 3 reasons we haven't had any success in two decades...

We're not anywhere close to being in the kind of cap position to afford what Byrd wants. We might as well cross him off the wish list.
He was demanding $9 million bucks from Buffalo just about the time they decided to bid him adieu. Fuggetaboutit. It ain't happenin'.

Wilcox/Heath were 3/4th rounders with one showing potential and the other having problem staying on the field. Just seems we undervalue the position and then wonder why we are susceptible on 3rd and long situations, or there is consistent confusion, etc. I understand what you're saying though (how MUCH money can we really put into the secondary) and is probably the way the team will go unless Pryor/Dix is the pick in the first.

*Matt Johnson, not Heath (undrafted)

The problem is that DBs that lack top end speed tend to fade out at a younger age. Charles Woodson or Darrell Green can lose speed as they age and still be fast enough.

A guy like Byrd (4.68 forty) does not have that same luxury.

Oh come on if he came here we will get someone that will ask if he can play linebacker when he is older. :D
