Does anyone else think this as well?

My thoughts on this have absolutely nothing to do with him going to the Raiders either.

The guy was just not all that great at LSU. If he was truly the most talented Quarterback in College Football then LSU would have had a National title.

If you watched an LSU game since Russell has been there it always seems like they need someone else at the Quarterback position to spark that Offense. I remember them getting all excited when Perriloux came to town because they thought he'd take over early.

I think hes at best Daunte Culpepper and I dont think a player with a ceiling thats only that high is worth the #1 overall pick.

What do you guys think about Russell?

The only reason I think most people believe that is because he hasn't been on the draft radar all season.

People readily admit Quinn's stock dropped, but most think he'll be a fine NFL QB because they've known about him. Russell kind of came out of nowhere, and people don't like that when they're assessing draft picks, especially QBs.

I'd feel a lot more tentative about him if he'd risen after the combine or something. But he did it with his play. I think he'll be a fine QB. He'll be what Leftwich never was.

Another Q. Carter, perhaps?

That may depend on which team he goes to.

Big. Strong. Accurate. Nice mechanics.

I can't really see why he would be a bust. Maybe if he was inaccurate there might be some worry.

I would watch LSU games just to see this guy play. He's one helluva athlete, and I can't see how anyone could say that it looked like LSU always needed a different QB.

If someone had axed me 6 months ago I would have said definitely a bust. His late season performance was pretty impressive, however, and I see strong potential. He'll need to be in the right system and tutored by the right QB coach. I'd bring him along slowly. He's doomed if he lands in Cleveland.

He's very Randal Cunningham like, if Cunningham is a bust than I guess Russell could be....but Cunningham wasn't a bust.

If Buddy Ryan hadn't been Randal's coach he would have been a great qb and not just a great athlete early in his career, look what a great qb he got to be in Minnesota and off the bench for Dallas.

Yes he had better wideouts but he also had much better coaching.

Well, Black Quarterback Comparison Rule #1 is that all black quarterbacks must ONLY be compared to other black quarterbacks ... and since there haven't been many 6'5 250 lbs. black quarterbacks, he simply must be Dante Culpepper.

Wait, I saw him compared to Quincy Carter and Randal Cunningham in this thread too .. I don't see a lot of similarities to their play, but thank you for adhering to Black Quarterback Comparison Rule #1.

Seriously his game is a lot like Quincys in my opinion. He just may not make the mistake.

This just seems like a Guy that will have that big 300 yard day occasionally cause his receivers burn some guys deep but for the most part your gonna get 196 with 1TD and 2 INTs.

I dont like his short game. I hate his release. Great Deep ball but just looks robotic out there.

He had a big game at the right time vs Brady Quinn but lucky for Russell he didnt have to face LSU's defense because Notre Dames is as bad as it gets.

I just think he has bust written all over him.

I would not take him over Brady Quinn, and I'm surprised his stock is so high, but I can't say I think he will be a bust. I've liked him since his Freshman year at LSU, but I just don't see him as the overall #1.

I said the same things about Peyton Manning over Ryan Leaf, and I am not saying Russell is Ryan Leaf or Quinn is Peyton. I'm talking about the difference between a "big, strong, wow you guy" versus the "trained in a pro set, polished" QB prospect.

So if Russell is the first type, who is the other polished type? ;)

Has nothing to do with another Black comparison.

The player im comparing him to just so happens to have a style that is identical to Russells and thats Daunte Culpepper. Their style of play is the exact same.

So cry somewhere else.

First rule of thumb, Cunningham was an exceptional athlete who later became a good quarterback regardless of his skin tone, it was complimentary.

I guess we are all racists for seeing similarities or when we compare Elway and Staubach since they are both white.

It's hard to say. One of the announcers at the bowl game w/ ND said he can throw the ball 40 (or was it 60?!!) yards WHILE SITTING ON THE GROUND!! I think it will depend on how good he is mentally. Will he be able to read defenses? Will he make good decisions? He certainly appears to have all the physical tools for the job...

Notre Dame is going to slowly become Quarterback U. Charlie Weiss is going to have those guys prepared and ready for the NFL on day 1. Thats some of the best coaching they could get as a Quarterback.

Brady Quinn for that reason and his physical traits in my opinion is the best Quarterback Prospect in this draft.
