Guess it is time to think about the offseason and the draft although still a bit depressed not playing this week.
By March 9th, we are going to see who we are bringing back and who we are moving on from as far as current members of the team. You can't bring back everyone and you wouldn't want it.
CB: Between Carr and Claiborne, they probably only bring back one but both will most likely be offered contracts. Carr wants to stay in Dallas and will take less to do so mainly because his family wants him to stay. Claiborne could have been in big money if he would have stayed healthy so sure Cowboys will offer him a one year deal with opinion on 2 or 3 years deal.
S: Question becomes is Wilcox finally showing he can play the position and is a better option than Church. Church is a great locker room presence and team leader although he probably will cost more than Wilcox. LA Chargers are said to be interested in Church so we will not get in a bidding war. Also Showers was switched from QB to S early in the year to learn the position and will compete for a roster spot at that position. Dallas may wait and see what sort of offers both receive before competing.
WR: Both Williams and Butler are UFA guys and frankly I believe we could do better in both cases although I do think that Dallas will offer a contract to Butler but definitely not big money.
OL: Depending on how Cooper looked to the coaches, I could see him signing on a 2 or 3 year deal and all signs currently are that he will. Most believe that we will not resign Leary and probably correct although it would not surprise me to see Dallas tag him with the transition tag and foster a trade. The transition tag would be $12 million though and Dallas would have to have a trade partner in hand to do it but a little more on this later.
RB: Best guess here is that we resign McFadden to a 2 year deal and trade Morris most likely. Dunbar could be resigned at the vet minimum although not right away.
TE: Escobar is gone but so might be Hanna with the micro fracture on the knee, extremely hard to come back from that and could see the TE corp be Witten, Swaim and Gathers.
DL: Believe we try to resign Terrell McClain although not right away, really believe we are looking at a couple of other options in free agency and the draft instead of bringing him back. Jack Crawford could be resigned at the beginning of training camp if needed. DE will most likely be addressed in the draft although we could surprise in free agency.
QB: Romo will be gone just not sure which way it will be. We will resign probably both Moore and Sanchez to compete in training camp and whoever wins the backup spot then the other will be released.
Free agency:
Most believe we will not be active in free agency until the late 2nd week/early 3rd week and frankly it is difficult to believe otherwise based on recent track record. I do believe it could be different this year because we are so close to the prize. The draft will be the main stay but one of two big signing could also be the ticket to getting over the hump so to speak.
S: Eric Berry is the prize if Kansas City decides to keep Poe instead but looking at a large contract but for a proven pro bowler. Contract most likely in the 5 year $65 million range. Still having Jones and Berry would be great. If not Berry then D.J. Swearinger who is only 25 and a lot cheaper could be the guy.
DE: Jason Pierre-Paul would be a great choice or Melvin Ingram would be also. Either will be expensive although the difference they would make on our DL would be amazing and quite honestly game changing. The question becomes will be will we be willing to pony up for one of those two guys. Forget the crying about the cap, it is always manipulated to what is needed.
DT: Wouldn't be surprised to see Dallas try to sign Dominic Easley DT Rams since they are going to a strict 3-4 defense and he really doesn't fit it. He is a RFA but not sure Rams will even tender him so believe Dallas will try to sign him or trade for him if he is tendered, something like a 6th that could become a 4th.
WR: We are going to sign any big name although could see us trying to give Josh Gordon a shot, it is just what Dallas does and if clean would be a huge asset. Now a guy I do think we try and sign and he should be available 3rd week of free agency is Cordelle Patterson who is finally starting to look like a guy that can run routes and catch the ball but is a dynamic returner. He wouldn't surprise me in the least if we signed him.
Trade(s):
There possibly could be some during the draft as usual but the big one could be Romo. Now most do not believe that we will get anything much for him in a trade and rightly so although the more interest there is the more the price goes up. Frankly, I only see 5 possible locations for him because I believe there are the only ones he might (big might) that he would consider and it will be a decision that both Jerry and Tony agree not anything else. Those teams are Denver, Houston, Chicago, LA Rams and LA Chargers.
Denver: Despite what Elway is saying, he is thinking Super Bowl not developing a QB. This is where Leary might come into the picture also as trade value along with Alfred Morris. All 3 could be traded to Denver who has plenty of cap space and it instantly improves their offense by a wide margin. Compensation would be no less than a 2nd round pick.
Houston: Does anyone really believe that O'Brien is going to tie his coaching tenure in Houston to Savage or Osweiller, well if you do then I have some ocean front property in North Dakota for you. Like I have said before the cap can be manipulated so forget the big O's number. I do believe if it is Houston then it is more of a player for player trade as in Braxton Miller for Tony Romo type deal.
Chicago: John Fox has basically been given one year to get the Bears to the playoffs and it is not going to be Cutler to do it. They most likely trade for Jimmy G. from the Pats although there will be other bidders for him so if that doesn't come about then the Bears best option is only Romo. Compensation is more of market bidders than anything else and frankly I would put Chicago as Romo's 5th choice.
LA Chargers: They are on my list because Rivers is said to want to be out of the LA mix and could request a trade, if so, he will be the hottest commodity and they would need Romo to excite the crowd to be. Long shot by far.
LA Rams: This actually is one that I believe could be the most likely. Rams have plenty of cap space, they need someone to mentor Goff, LA needs a face to believe in, and Jerry has a great repore with the owner after leading the charge to get him to LA. Think about the Rams signing Terrance Williams in free agency, trading for Leary and Romo, signing a Riley Reiff at RT, then already having a good defense, Gurley at RB and young WR and pretty good TEs. Romo would make them competitive in that division right away. Compensation could be a number of things including possibly player for player but I would suspect a 2nd round choice and switch of 3rd or 4th round choices. Most will say not possible and I will say that decisions between owners are most of the time not what we think.
Draft:
28: Tanoh Kpassagnon DE Villanova - not rated this high YET but he well could be the best DE in the draft although doesn't have the resume of the other top DEs. He fits all the boxes for Garrett, Stephen, and Marinelli. His height, weight, and speed are all great. He will rise up the boards. Compares to JPP.
37. T.J. Watt OLB/DE Wisconsin - another that will rise up the boards and has many skills. Although most think of him as a 3-4 OLB, I see him as more of a Lawrence Taylor type that could be a situation pass rusher and play both SAM and WILL positions. Hard worker, good producer, and a guy that leads a team.
60. Chidobe Awuzie CB Colorado - very good speed, instinctive, a shutdown type of corner, would be a nice addition to our secondary. Could see him in the slot to begin with then moving to RC as the starter.
69. Kevin King CB/S Washington - tall, rangy CB that will be moved to safety, great speed and tackling ability, can play in the box or deep, good cover guy, paring him with Jones would be great although if we sign Eric Berry then this pick become an OL guy easily.
4th round. Daeshon Hall DE Texas A&M - Could see him as somewhat a sleeper pick as he has been a good DE opposite Garrett with not as much fanfare, could also play DT if needed.
5th round. Chad Wheeler OT USC - has some baggage but very talented and could be our RT of the future, could move up or down on the boards after combine.
6th round. (trade of Morris). Travin Dural WR LSU - has some upside.
7th round. Chad Kelly QB Mississippi - could be a project guy much like what Patriots do.
