Jared Goff or Carson Wentz for the Browns at No. 2?: 'It's a flip of the coin' says Mel Kiper

Kiper suggested the Browns can now use the same strategy in deciding which quarterback to take at No. 2 in the draft.

He has North Dakota State quarterback Carson Wentz penciled in for the Browns there, but acknowledged they could opt for Cal's Jared Goff instead.

"I think it's a flip of the coin right now on those two quarterbacks,'' Kiper said Monday on a conference call previewing the NFL Combine, which begins Wednesday in Indianapolis. "Some like Goff (6-4, 215), some like Wentz (6-5, 232). I just went with the bigger quarterback in Wentz at No. 2.''

Kiper said he also picked Wentz for the Browns in his mock draft last week after talking to sources.

"It gets down to what you hear,'' he said. "That's all mocks are. It's not personal preference. They're what you're hearing from people in the league based on the Senior Bowl and what's been going on in terms of evaluations. We still have a long way to go. It's a two-horse race there between Wentz and Goff.''

"Goff's the better passer,'' he said. "Wentz has mobility but Goff can move around in the pocket. Certainly for Goff, if he was a little bigger right now than he is in terms of the weight, I don't think there'd be any question he'd be the first quarterback taken. And I still have Goff rating-wise ahead of Carson Wentz.''

He added, "if (weight) is the only criticism you have, you've got yourself a heckuva prospect. If all you're worrying about is weight and strength on a quarterback coming out of college, there isn't much to critique then.''

"If he's not going to be given time, then he's going to have to work through that,'' said Kiper. "(But) he didn't get hurt at Cal and he got hit a lot. And he can really throw the football. I said back in September, October, he spins it as well as any quarterback in the country. And I watched him two years ago. I thought they had a shot going to Northwestern, and they ended up winning that game early in the year, first game of the year, because Goff elevated that team to really solid heights and made them a dangerous football team.''

He noted that the quarterback that doesn't go No. 2 to the Browns ends up being in the mix for Dallas at No. 4.

"If Dallas doesn't take the quarterback leftover, meaning Goff or Wentz, then you have San Francisco at seven, then you get into that free fall. Then does somebody trade up to get that quarterback? It's going to be interesting if Dallas doesn't take a quarterback at 4, how far that second quarterback off the board drops.''

It really a competition between the more NFL ready guy (Goff) vs. the guy with the higher ceiling (Wentz). You would think Cleveland would go with Goff since he's likely to be playing on day 1. But who knows?

I'd be OK with either.

I think that's exactly it
Goff is more ready now and Wentz has the upside but not the experience
If I was the Browns I would go Goff because they are going to throw him into the fire right away
If I'm the Cowboys I go Wentz and develope him
Wentz hasn't played a ton of games because he had a good QB sheaf of him. Throwing him in right away would be a mistake I think

They will probably pick Wentz because he can handle cold weather better.

If Dallas goes QB @ #4 I'd be shocked. Still thinks Jones wants to win now with Romo and will convince himself that Tony can last the season.

cold weather is overblown IMO. rodgers played at Cal, has done well in GB. Kelly played in Miami, did well in Buffalo. Key is the system and developing the QB.

I think it is better to have a QB with a big arm that can pierce passes through those cold windy days.

Goff doesn't get the kind of velocity that Rodgers gets on his throws.

I wouldn't say Goff has a weak arm but it's not a strong arm either..

Who says that Wentz has to start from day 1 in Cleveland. They still have McCown who can be their starter for a while.

What an ironic twist of events... In January, nobody thought we'd have a chance at getting Goff, who was considered to be pro ready and the best prospect... then the Wentz hype train came to town...
Well, now the North Dakota kid is considered the best thing since Andrew Luck... so now we are "settling" for Goff... the player we wanted all along... brilliant.

I think they start who ever they draft very quickly
They need a little something for the fans to get excited about

The hand size with Goff sorties me. Seems odd that something like that is so important but sure seems to be a big deal

They need to take the QB that is tougher mentally and physically because is going to get beat up in both areas as the starting QB and next great hope for a snake bit team. Feel sorry for whoever goes there because the odds are against them.

The development of the QB by the team that drafted him is the most under-considered topic when discussing QBs.

In a different universe, Rodgers gets drafted by Cleveland, thrown into the fire Day 1, and fails.

Unfortunately, I think it would be smart of Cleveland to take the stronger arm and the guy who grew up in North Dakota who will look at Cleveland in December as a summer vacation. Over the weaker-armed Californian.
