I wonder if they ever just work out guys as a favor to their agent.

I've actually seen that referenced before that it does happen. Whether it's happening here, I don't know.

Never hurts to take a look.

Sometimes, you get lucky and get guys like E Sims at LB who can provide depth. I think Sims was sitting on his couch as well until the Cowboys called . . . .

I remember a lot of mocks had us drafting him. I was thrilled when the Broncos drafted him so JJ didn't have the chance to take him. Didn't want him then, don't want him now.

Does he even have an agent?

I'm sure they work out guys as favors to agents. And they might even work them out to have a reason to talk to the agent given what other players he might represent heading into FA. Not that anybody is talking specifics, of course. :)

He's also a DFW kid. Pretty sure they're just working out a guy at a position of need because he's 25 years old, a former consensus first round draft pick and would require absolutely zero guaranteed money. His previous performance says there's a 95% likelihood he won't make it through the first round of training camp cuts, but the 5% chance of something else is worth an non guaranteed flier. Big whoop. He's obviously had issues with commitment to the game, given that he walked out of training camp with the Broncos one year. Maybe a couple of years working on the UPS loading dock provided a new perspective. You take 90 bodies to training camp, they're not all going to be Julius Peppers.

He's 28, will be 29 in August. Denton kid. Marinelli brought in former busts when he was with the Bears. Like Omobi Okoye who was a backup there and might even be coming here.

All dead on except he's 28 years old not 25, and will be 29 before the season starts. Same draft as Anthony Spencer.

Yep, he gave Vernon Gholston a look too.

It happens all the time, but it's kinda crazy when you see a guy a team traded up for in order to draft him in the middle of the first round flame out so completely. All that time, money, effort and evaluation, and then, poof.

Not a good year for DL. Gaines Adams, Jamaal Anderson, Amobi Okoye, Adam Carriker, Justin Harrell, Jarvis Moss all drafted in the Top 20, and all busts. If you came into that draft thinking you had to get an impact defensive lineman come hell or highwater, you were in for a world of hurt. Some pretty bad DL picked in the 2nd round too ... Alan Branch, Turk McBride, Ikaika Alama-Francis, Dan Banzuin, Victor Abiamiri.

 • Moss was a Parade All-America defensive end coming out of high school from Denton, Texas. He was red-shirted as a freshman in 2003 after suffering a hernia and hip problems, and in 2004 he battled numerous hip and groin injuries. In 2005, the UF sports health staff discovered a rare pelvic bone infection that caused him to drop 20-to-30 pounds and had him thinking about quitting the game. The UF sports health staff targeted the problem back to a preexisting injury from high school and treated it very aggressively for 6-to-8 weeks. For a six-week period he had an around the clock IV that had strong antibiotics to fight the infection. Since he missed preseason drills, the coaching staff and UF sports health staff didn't anticipate him playing until the middle of the year, however he recovered ahead of schedule and played in the final series of the Tennessee game (third game of the season). He went on to finish fifth in the SEC and tops on the team in sacks with 7.5.
 • A prep All-American at Ryan High School in Denton, Texas, Moss signing with Florida was a bit of a shock, as that area of the country is predominantly controlled by the Big 12.

Holy cow. What a row of clowns. I wonder how that can happen? Crazy.

Don't want to be drafting for need with that cast of characters.

I often wonder the specifics as to a complete and epic fail. How can they be a gifted athlete and then seem to forget everything football? I mean they can't be that inferior to the NFL talent level, right?

Burnt out, maybe? Culture shock of being thrust into the real world the second their collegiate career ends?

Maybe the level of college talent he was compared to during his tenure.

In Moss' case, I think there is a case of recency bias and having a huge last game on a big stage against Ohio State in the 2007 National Championship game. You see that a lot in the NBA where a guy who has a great NCAA Tournament gets over drafted. I also think people make irrational comparisons because a guy looks like a guy who former player for the same team/school who had success. In Moss' case, there were a lot of Javon Kearse comparisons being thrown around. Also got to look at what the fad du jour were in the NFL at the time, and two Tampa 2 teams faced off in the Superbowl (Indy vs. Chicago) which probably put a high demand on 4-3 pass rushers.

Why not just keep Victor Butler unless they think he will be too expensive?

I don't think the new defensive staff views him as a 4-3 DE.

Me, too. Especially when it's not something obvious like the players psychology or motivation.

Take a player like Bobby Carpenter for Dallas, for instance. Good guy, big school. Hard worker. Smart. Projects to a first round pick, and then has a 6-7 year career as a backup. How does that happen? And he's not even maybe the best example because he was a bust, but not one of these disasters who's not in the league two years after getting selected in the first round.
