I think they are arguing math vs. reality. Yes, Dallas is still in the NFC title mix, but realistically a team that hasn't won a game without its starting QB is out of any race. It would be better IMO for Garrett not to even mention the race until we show we can actually win a game with Cassel. We beat the Commanders, then he can say we're still in the running.

Reality is, if we win this weekend, we're inexplicably one game out. If Garrett were to pretend that's not the case, he wouldn't be doing his job. The fans are just going to have to accept the simple math for what it is.

They're also in the mix for the number 1 pick. Playing in a terrible division doesn't absolve you from ineptitude. In fact, it highlights it.

This is also true.

I don't think the discussion was about absolving ineptitude. I think it was about the reality of the situation. We've got a legitimate shot to beat a fairly bad WAS team this weekend.

Exactly! We win Monday and eagles and giants lose ( which is a huge possibility) we are one game out with a 3-2 division record. All 4 teams suck in this division. Other than the patriots and panthers we have been in every game. Here's hoping Cassel has gotten more comfortable.

He has to say it to keep his players interested and focused. I don't think he will get much effort going forward if he tells the world they're finished.

Deep down, he knows they have no chance, but he has to keep up appearances so his players stay engaged.

I believe if we see someone just trying to collect a paycheck they will be gone next year. I honestly believe the players will fight!

Which is absolutely insane when you think about it.

This season has sucked, no doubt. But we might as well enjoy the division race while we still can here.

I don't think we have a shot. But I'm a fan. I don't expect the Cowboys coach to say we have no shot. In fact, I'd be disappointed if he did, even if I've already checked out and have moved on to contemplating who we can get with our top 5 pick in the draft.

We could beat the Commanders twice (we won't) but no way we go into GB with our garbage squad and beat them, let alone Buffalo and NYJ.

Nope - I'm still pulling for the highest possible draft pick that even our braintrust cannot screw up.

Jason Garrett is many things but "grade A stupid" is not one of them. If you insist on tearing the man down, you can at least be honest about it. His mistakes as HC of Cowboys are too numerous to be ignored and just call him stupid. Perhaps your complaint would have merit if you focus on his true failures rather than making things up. Maybe you could talk about his poor ability to evaluate talent or his refusal to plan for the future... just a few suggestions to steer you in the right direction. As a well established academic scholar, one of the weakest arguments you can make about Jason Garrett is saying he is "class A stupid". Have a nice day. :)

He is certainly not stupid.

He cannot gameplan.
Adjust.
Out coach.

He is like Peyton manning... Once wheels start falling off. He's done.

That this Cowboys team - without Romo - has a chance of winning the NFC East.

If you would care to wager otherwise, just let me know. I've heard enough hollow talk this season to last a lifetime.

i think your getting a little over excited. I haven't implied that I think the Cowboys will win the East. Garrett himself isn't even saying that.

I don't understand why the concept is so difficult for some people. It's Garret's job to get the team to play hard every week. If you are mathematically still alive then that's a reason to play motivated. When they are no longer mathematically alive its the head coaches job to find some other way to motivate them.

Whatever the scenario, it's Garrett's job to get them to play hard.

His press conferences are not about telling you what you want to hear. They are about sending a message to the team of what they need to hear.

It's the NFL. You have a legitimate shot at beating nearly any team, due to parity. Just because the division is weak, doesn't mean the Cowboys have a shot. Recent history suggests that when you lose 8/9 games, you are a pretty bad team.

At least we've reached the point now that if we lose this weekend, we can finally end this silliness of how we are still alive.

I'm not a JG apologist by any stretch of the imagination, but what else is a coach supposed to say? "After reading the Cowboyszone message board, we have decided as an organization to tank the rest of the season and go for the draft pick"? Give me a break.

Pretty much.

Angry fans aren't rational fans. I have no problem with JG fighting through this season and calling on his team to give their best effort. If our problem is a culture of losing-- how does mailing it in help change that? Even if we get a great talent b/c we draft in the top 5-- if he comes to a team that embraces a philosophy of quitting with 5 games left to play-- how can we ever expect to win?

The fact that the division is weak absolutely does mean the Cowboys have a shot. A bad team might win the East this season.
