Martellus Bennett would never play for a Jason Garrett coached team again. He said he hated Witten and Garrett on that E 60 episode.

I just listened to a little of the segment and I regret ever mentioning the idea of bringing Bennett back around here.

I just thought he was goofy. I see now that in fact he's cancerous and a sick soul. I see he can't get along with anyone and would spread mental VD.

What if the answer was a guy we already had the smarts to draft but failed to integrate into our team?

Did we learn something with Dak/Tony...that sometimes its best to turn the page....that Youth must be served?

I didn't start this thread thinking this way...but my mind is captivated with the need to at least consider bringing in Bennett and letting Witten go.
I have to think Marty B is very near the bottom of the list of players Jason Garrett would want to bring back.
Could be wrong though

He will be here starting for another 2-3 years. As long as he continues to put up stats like a Top-10 TE, he is going nowhere! So hold off on your "We need to draft his replacement" because he'd just end up rotting on the bench.

I actually think Swaim may be groomed as his replacement. May not be a great receiver but he might end up just being a solid overall TE, which is all you can ask for when you've had a HOF TE for the last 10+ years

After learning more of the Bennett brothers I agree. Wouldn't want them around. They sound toxic and racist.

MB has already played for 4 teams. Seems like his schtick isn't welcome for long wherever he goes.

It's time to seriously think about Witten ' eventual replacement.
And that replacement is Michigan's Jake Butt.
Not sure who has the worse name
Jake Butt
or
Wendell Smallwood

And "Jake Butt playing Tight End for the Cowboys" sounds too much like a production by the Village People. :muttley:

Or an adult movie.

Couple years, old fellow.

We need him badly because there ain't squat behind him that can do everything he can do. We really need to select someone in the draft that has a chance to be very very good. Witt was a 3rd rounder. If we could replace him for the most part with another 3rd rounder I'd be ecstatic.

Need to groom someone quick, Witten is on his last run, maybe can play another year or so, but we need a replacement soon. Dude is a definite Hall of Famer but he has no legs anymore.

Listening to Witten he doesn't appear to have any intention of retiring anytime soon especially with the season he and the team are having. I'm sure Dak's bright future has invigorated him. He's not about to hang it up with the arrow pointing up with the Cowboys. He hasn't had injury issues and he's never relied on speed or athletic ability so he could continue moving the chains for the next few years.

I say he has 2 to 3 years. If we win a Super Bowl, I wouldn't be surprised if he called it quits.
The beauty of Witten is that he's never been a burner so it's really imperceptible if he loses a step. Having that extra step has never been his game, unlike a Tony Gonzalez or a Shannon Sharpe.
He just excels in finding the open area and sitting down in it waiting for the ball to come to him or using his size to box out defenders.
With this skill set, he can play longer than tight ends who rely more on speed than subtlety to get open.

Witten's said multiple times that this year's team has rejuvenated him.

Kinda got the feeling that if experienced anymore season's like in 2015 that he'd had hung it up soon. But this team looks like it will contend for a very long time, and Jason sounds like he wants to be apart of that.

Witten is a mainstay of this offense! He is Dak's go-to guy.
I just think his physical window is closing soon.
No several years. Maybe 2 years at the most.
I do not see him as trade bait, good lad. If so, I'd feel very lucky to get a three. Probably more like a four.

Frankly I could see him playing well into his late 30s. He may have to eventually take on a role as blocking specialist and secondary te, but if he supports that 2 to 3 years from now im onboard for this generations version of Mr. Cowboy!

If we win a SB, I think Witten hangs up his cleats immediately.
No way I sign him to an extended contract at this point. He's slow; his blocking gets worse each year; but he can read a zone and get open, and he catches the ball. Still, one year contracts from now on, and I'm replacing him first opportunity I get. It's the harsh reality of the NFL.

Witten is no longer a top TE, and he's only going to get worse, not better.

Witten ran a 4.65 at the combine. That's not slow for a TE his size. He's probably a 4.9 at best now.

Exactly. In his first five years Madden and others specifically commented about how linebackers didn't have the speed to cover him.

Witten was 4.65 and he even had another 40 where he was timed at 4.56.

His 40 time coming into the pros was as fast as the fleetest tight ends at the combine in recent years. He was VERY fast for his size. ELITE for his size.

I just laugh at people who think it's all some voodoo magic why he so often gets open. Sure he's crafty, but crafty by itself doesn't work in this league.

Again go look at the entire tight end class from this past draft. Only one could match Witten in SPEED.
http://www.nfl.com/combine/top-performers#year=2016&workout=FORTY_YARD_DASH&position=TE

He never looks fast which has been to his advantage.

Of course he's not going to separate from a corner or from a safety. But pound for pound he was fast. At 265 pounds he also had a 31" vertical which is superb. The guy was an absolutely incredible athlete.

Now.... he's no longer fast with his age and 14 years of banging! Duh!
