I was never in denial when Jerry came out and said Wade is staying I knew it was about money and not winning.
I betting he has nor sold as many PSL's as he wanted to already and may be a little cap strapped after paying out some bonuses and paying off the new stadium
It is about money, but it's also about waiting to see what Shanahan wants to do and what Garrett does.
Shanahan said he was going to take a few weeks to sit down and really evaluate whether he wants to coach next season. In the meanwhile, Garrett has HC interviews. If Garrett gets an HC job and Shanahan comes back and says he wants to coach next season, then you will see Jerry make a play on him. To be honest, I think Wade could be talked into staying here as DC. Maybe even add the Assistant HC title to him...
If he gets Shanahan now, (and ends up firing both JG and Wade in the process) then Jerry will eat 6 million in coaching salaries along with whatever he pays Shanahan. If he can play it like I describe above, then he no longer has to pay Garrett and he would have had to hire a DC anyway. And some of Wades salary would be offset by the fact that you no longer need Brian Stewart.
Here's the catch though. Cowher has already said he's not coaching in 2009. If Shanahan does the same, then I think you will see Jerry wait it out until 2010 when he has 3 of the best names out there: Holmgren, Shanahan, and Cowher. Plus he would not have to eat Wade's and JG's salary, and he can dump the rest of the staff with minimal financial repercussions.
