I suffer from depression and take medication for it. It's really hard to explain because some days are fine and others you feel like you don't matter at all in the world and everything is crashing in around you. The littlest thing can tip the scale and you just feel helpless. It's tough and the biggest toll is your family trying to understand and cope with your mood swings. I can assure you it is no fun. You feel like you just want to get away from everything and everyone and "hide" from it.

*big hugs* I've suffered with bouts of depression myself, though I am not currently on medication for it. It is one of the hardest things in the world to deal with. Keep fighting the good fight, darlin'.

It runs in my family, apparently. My dad suffered with it his whole life and killed himself a little over a year and a half ago.

My thoughts are with the Novaceks. The pain of losing someone that way is a wound that never truly heals.

Suicide except in circumstances like the one I set out before, might not be cowardly but it is selfish. Whatever the reason, at the end, the person left his/her family behind holding the pieces. It is tragic for the families left behind.

Stop man, just stop. If you don't understand what others are going through, if you don't know the facts behind medical depression, then just stop. Read and perhaps learn.

My son has depression, and not only does he suffer from it, but the rest of the family. You never know what the next phone call, or knock on the door brings. Meds help, but the person has to be motivated or rational enough to stay on the regime.

You hope that when the person is at what they believe is the last strand, either they can reach out for help, or someone is there to save them.

Prayers and thoughts go out to the Novacek family. And a hug for my son.

Whe you hug your son, give him one for me and let him know he's not alone. Mental health issues are one of degree, not of kind. Many of us get depressed from time to time, some more than others. With young men, regular reassurance and support can go a long way.

M'Kevon,

Bless you brother.....my prayers are with you and your family.....show him that love and support.

A minute doesnt go by that I wish my son was back here with me. Its such a misunderstood illness.......especially with teenagers and young adults.

Up to 35% of the adults on this forum may be depressed at any one time (I think it's closer to 15% which is still mind boggling). 50% of adults will suffer from severe depression at least once in their lifetime. 15-25% of those with regular depression (not bipolar) are treatment resistant. IOWs nothing seems to get them well even if meds and therapy work to some degree. The ten year mortality rate for an adult male over 50 years old that has severe depression is nearly the same as that of an alcoholic.

why do you think it is closer to 15 than 35?

Depression for most is situational, death in the family, breakup of marriage, loss of job, your team losing a big game (just witness this forum after losses to know what I mean) etc
