Jaylon's upcoming contract

Agree but the NFLPA and the agents would not like that as it would greatly affect the FA market. And some of these players do not want to stay with their teams when they get the chance to walk.

The next CBA negotiations are gonna get ugly.

"Unless he gets hurt" is exactly why it wouldn't be a dumb move to sit out.

If he has a bad injury under the 2nd franchise tag, he may never earn more than his $20 million 2019 salary. If he sits out 2019, he's almost assured of getting over $40 million guaranteed.
Ididn't think you were advocating sitting out the whole year..... I thought you meant until Week 10 to get his service time

He is assured of getting 40m right now.... he will never get a better deal.... his stock is at its highest

If he plays under the 20m tag then he only needs another 20m in 2020 to break even...if he sits out he will never make up that 20m he threw away.... football players don't just tag an extra year of top play onto the end of their career.....LBell how stupid sitting out was... he was instantly replaced for 500k

This is another example of what I have been saying with regard to our salary cap. Jaylon is turning into the top 5 pick that we envisioned he would. If he continues to improve it is highly unlikely Jerry lets him get away.

This is a contract that few are talking about but it's coming up swiftly. You don't HAVE to choose between Jaylon and Tank but if you have to choose one do you choose Jaylon or Tank? I'm taking Jaylon.

Tanks cap hit might be as much as Jaylon and Byrons combined. Let that sink in a little bit. I want to keep Tank around but we tried to sign him in the offseason and that didn't work. He will be harder to resign now because his starting number will be his franchise tag number for this year.

I know the team wants Tank around, and rightly so. They will try to resign him. But the way I see it he is going to be way overpaid OR he is going to be traded. I don't think the Cowboys will reach a "fair" price to the team to keep him around.

Mega contract decisions coming up:

Dak
Zeke
Cooper
Jaylon
Byron
Tank

The odds of us signing ALL of these guys to mega deals is unlikely. Even though we all prefer to keep all of these guys they aren't going to over pay for all of them. It just won't work.

The team could resign them all but the odds are stacked against it. Moreover the odds are if we extend all of them to mega deals we are probably going to regret at least two of them. Pick any two.

Yes most would want to keep all but THEY ALL don't have to be extended this off season. Lawrence is the only one that absolutely has to be resigned this off season.

Elliott is under contract through 2019 and because he was a 1st round pick the Cowboys can exercise the 5th year option.

Cooper is under contract through 2019 so they can actually extend him during the 2019 season and that will affect the 2020 cap.

Smith is signed through 2019 and again could be extended during the 2019 season and won't count until the 2020 cap.

Jones, the Cowboys exercised his fifth year option for 2019 so again can be extended in the 2019 season for the 2020 cap.

Prescott is under contract through 2019 and can be extended during the 2019 season hitting the 2020 cap.

With the Cowboys having over 50 mil to work with this off season after Lawrence is signed there will be money left so the Cowboys can then work on some of the players they could do during the 2019 season. My guess and it's only a guess is they will next try to resign Cooper and Prescott since Jones has already said he was going to extend them this off season. Elliott, they have 2 seasons before he becomes a free agent so again my guess is they will next target Smith and Jones during the 2019 season . Again it's only guesswork because none of us will be sitting in on any of the decisions and/or negotiating.

The next CBA negotiations are gonna get ugly.

They were ugly last time or did you forget there was a shorten season because of the CBA negotiating. There was that lockout and they missed the first 2 or 3 games of the season.

I think we should have a luxury type where if you draft players then that don't count towards the cap. Or something like that. Teams are punished every year because they draft well and personally I don't think that's right.

The league sort of address that. Before this CBA rookies used to get HUGE contracts, sometimes more than starting vets with 5 years experience but now each round of the draft are slotted as to what they make and it's way way way less than what they used to get. When Sam Bradford was drafted the year before this CBA he got a rookie contract that paid him more than 22 starting QB's, now no rookie QB is paid more than any starting QB.

No. Wrong.

He graded out as the #1 CB every week of the season.

He is a Nnamdi Ashomuga type guy. He's more important than Tank.

Flashy interceptions are great, but I'd rather have a guy who week after week takes a guy out of the game.

Show me the link of a creditable site that says Jones graded out as the #1 CB EVERY week. I just heard on the radio last week while on my way to work on a national sports talk show and they referred to another CB ( don't remember which one but it wasn't Jones) who was the #1 CB just about every week last season.

The year he didn't play because he was injured should not count towards his contract. The Lawyers should have put that in the contract. If anything he owes us since we gambled on buying damaged goods. Until this past season I was still of the opinion that we should have picked Myles Jack. Glad we didn't since Jaylon is the man!

It counts against his contract but his rookie season didn't count for accrued seasons for getting vested because he didn't play a single down.
.

Tank is the one I think has the most trade value and would allow us to sign the rest with ease.

Hate to break this to you but teams don't trade for players that technically are free agents except for getting tagged and then have to pay an even higher amount after that second tagged season is over. Teams trade for players that are in the last year of their contract if the team who has him allows them some time to negotiate a new contract before the trade but I don't remember a player on a tag ever getting traded. Just look happened to the skins after they tagged Cousins a second time and then had to let him become a free agent after that season and he signed with the vikings.

He's not assured of 40 now. Without a contract, he's only assured of 20.

Your assumptions about not making it up disregard the potential for injury. Personally, I'd rather take a guaranteed 40 or more for 2020 & 2021, than 20 for 2019 with no guarantee for anything beyond.

And yes, I'm talking about sitting the entire year What the Bell situation taught us is that accruing the year is meaningless under the 2nd franchise tag. Playing those 6 games is even more risky because now you're risking 40 million for just 7 or 8 million in salary for those games.

You don't accrue the year, but the 2nd franchise tag still counts.

He is assured of 40m IF he signs...... which HE refuses to do..... it is on him

LBell did not improve his situation and the fact that Gurley, Bell, Hunt, Gordon, Fournette, etc all got replaced so easily and cheaply proves RBs don't have much leverage

DLaw is not an elite DE so he needs to sign an extension as quickly as possible... he is above average but not worth Mack money

He is assured of 40m IF he signs...... which HE refuses to do..... it is on him

If he signs the tag, he only gets around 20.5.

I do agree he's worth no where near Mack money and if that's what he wants, I'd let him walk. My point is that if he really thinks he can get anywhere close to that, he'd be an idiot to play a single game without a long term deal.

Hey look, verdict made a post about Jaylon Smith’s contract....but REALLY he just wanted to make his point of how we shouldn’t resign Lawrence. Because, ya know, hes overrated and “disappeared”

@Sydla

I always felt this way. I think a percent of their salary should not count against the cap if you draft that player. Not sure what percent it should be - maybe 15 -20% of their salary should not count against the cap if you resign a player that you drafted. Teams should be rewarded for drafting and training players. Right now the NFL rewards teams that does not draft well
Correct. There needs to be something where teams can keep their drafted players.

You make a great point, but ways around that too. That player doesn't have to resign with the team that drafted them or something to that effect

@Sydla

This place would be so much better without agendas

Can you please stop with this?
There has never been an elite CB in NFL history who had zero interceptions in his best year

NEVER

NEVER

did I say NEVER?

Byron is a good above average CB

Trade him for a second rd pick and draft another CB with that pick
true for sure the BJ lovers are in full effect..look the dude is just another version of Carr, solid CB but doesnt have ball skills..Hes our best corner maybe but no where near elite..just because he didnt give up any TDs doesnt change that fact that late in the year and the playoffs he was giving up the chunk play and setting up the other team to get in the redzone and let someone else finish..im not saying he sucks but hes not getting Carr money because we saw that mistake..Lewis would be just fine if BJ wants to price himself out of here, not huge drop off..once teams realized his weakness was the big downfield throws they a started throwing them , he wasn't targeted a lot early until they figured out his weakness..
