For Jeff Heath, return to Canton a reminder of how he made Cowboys' roster

OXNARD, Calif. -- It’s easy to dismiss the Hall of Fame Game as meaningless. Just don’t tell that to Jeff Heath.

In 2013, the last time the Dallas Cowboys played in the NFL’s preseason opener, Heath was an undrafted free agent out of Saginaw Valley State, unknown to just about everybody.

“Probably was not a guy that we thought would make our team his first year,” coach Jason Garrett said.

But when the coaches reviewed the game on tape, Garrett was stunned.

--------------------------------------

I'm actually really excited to see Heath get his chance at being a starter. He had major growing pains his first couple years, but he has matured into a guy who has a knack for making plays. Surprising speed, quickness, and athleticism as well. We haven't had a playmaking safety in a long time.

I know this board is split on the guy, but I think he is going to be really solid with Jones next to him.

Thoughts?

Sounds a lot like Garrett describing himself in the beginning. "He had major growing pains". So if Heath was sooo great then why couldnt he even unseat the hapless 2nd string Wilcox last year or any year? They are playing Heath because they have no one else. IF he surprises, great.

Jeff Heath will have more ints this season than any cowboys safety in the last 10 years

I'll eat 15 lbs of crabs with butter sauce if I lose. Bet

And how many interceptions will that be? And you know this because he has all of 3 or 4 interceptions in his 3 year career?

This is a somewhat facetious analogy, but using your line of logic, Tony Romo should have never gotten a shot at being the starting QB because early in his career, he wasn't able to unseat Henson, Tesdaverde, or Bledsoe.

Did Romo start playing because they had "no one else"? No. He played because he grew in the system, gained coaches trust, and earned playing time and the right to be the starter.

In limited time on the field, Heath made a more visible difference than Wilcox or any other safety that we have.

Romo didnt play because Parcells was an idiot. He Rotted on the bench for 3 or 4 year because all the hapless Parcells wanted was a bus driver. And low and behold Romo did unseat Bledslow finally. Should have been done much earlier.

I will chalk it up to coaching stupidity. Now the ONLY way Heath is going to be real good is if Garrett is that stupid. And there is a good chance he is. Garrett has showed himself to be one of the worst talent evaluators the Cowboys have EVER had.

Wait, so which is it? In your previous post, you said Heath is now the starter purely out of necessity and that we have no other options.

And now you're saying that since Garrett is one of the worst evaluators of talent, Heath will probably end up being real good.

Nice try spinner. Never said he will probably wind up being good. Only said that its either one of two ways:

1. Heath was never good enough to start and its all we have left
2. He was always good enough but Garrett was such a bad judge of talent he rotted on the bench.

So he either sucks, or Garrett is a moron.

So no matter what happens, it's 'bad'. Great perspective.

Im going on record, Heath gets 3+ picks and plays amazing all year, barring injury.

Change that to 5+ and I'm right there with you. Heath is always around the ball. He'll have 2+ fumble recoveries too. Don't be surprised to see him take an INT or fumble recovery to the house this year. He's got some wheels.....
