One piece in a logjam
After Russell and Quinn, Kolb is in a QB logjam with prospects like Drew Stanton, Troy Smith, Trent Edwards, Jordan Palmer, John Beck, Chris Leak, Tyler Palko, Jeff Rowe, Isaiah Stanback and Paul Thompson.

"First of all, Kolb's prototypical — 6-3, 220, with a strong arm and good mobility," said Jeff Ireland, the Dallas Cowboys' vice president of pro and college scouting. "He's tough physically and mentally.

"I think what he needs to do the most here is to explain to everybody what he was required to do in Houston's system. I think once people realize how much they challenged him, they're really going to be impressed with what he did."

While Briles' system isn't radical, it is different. It's not a pro-style system. The Cougars don't have a lot of plays — just a lot of options that put great responsibility on the quarterback to make the right decisions.

"There were so many options built into each play, and once Kevin explains exactly what he was supposed to do, they're going to be impressed," said Jerry Rhome, who has been working with Kolb at UH. "He's going to put it in NFL terminology when he's being interviewed, and they're going to go, 'Wow.'

"You have to be very intelligent to do what Kevin was asked to do in that system. ... Now he's got to let the NFL know what he did."

After the Cougars' season ended, Kolb signed with Houston's Select Sports Group. Agent Jeff Nalley hired Rhome, who tutored Vince Young last year, to prepare Kolb for the draft. Rhome spent 33 years in the NFL as a quarterback, quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator.

I don't think Houston even has a playbook. Kolb is supposed to be pretty sharp, so it shouldn't be a problem for him to adjust.

That is not a surprise to me. I live in Houston and hear about the kid all the time. He seems to be a good kid and he always talked about team over his stats they ask him while what about this stat and he say while I never got them if not for the guys around me stuff like that (He been interviewed over the years on the sports talk shows in Houston).

He looks to have NFL talent I betting if he does well at the combine look for him to go in the 2nd to 3rd round.

is 6'3" and 220 prototypical? isn't Romo about that height and maybe a bit lighter? anyway, what i want to say is this: give me a QB who is intelligent yes, but all the great ones had a QUICK RELEASE and made GOOD READS. if you can figure out where the ball should go, and can get it there fast, size really doesn't mean too much unless you're like 5'10". accuracy is nice too, but that has to do with mechanics and that can be improved. i'm hoping we draft a QB in Rd 3 or 4 since our first couple picks need to be spent on OG, LB, or WR in no particular order...

The Houston Cougars offense was pretty neat and was really a lot of different offense all put together in the playbook. I don't think there is a name for what Houston was doing.

One of the Titans scouts is projecting him into the 2nd per the article, so you're prolly right...

At some point after the first round, the Texans are expected to draft a quarterback. The top two are JaMarcus Russell and Brady Quinn, and the competition to be No. 3 is wide open. The third quarterback could sneak into the first round.

"I think Kolb's going in the second round," said C.O. Brocato, the Tennessee Titans' national coordinator of college scouting. "I've watched a lot of his games, and I've liked him for quite a while.

"Some wonder if he's a product of their system, but I don't think he is. Kevin Kolb's a player. He's got everything you want. Not only does he have the big arm, but he can take something off the ball when he has to. And he's accurate."

A common theme among scouts surveyed was Kolb's ability to make teammates better.

"That kid's a hell of a leader," Brocato said. "Art Briles gave him a lot of responsibility, and he handled it and got better every season."

It was a wideopen offense with many different offensive formations and different groupings. They seem to take different offenses and combined them into it's own style of offense.

The Houston Cougars ran the same offense as Stephenville Highschool if that helps you.

Just kidding. Houston's coach Art Briles was the coach at Stephenville before joining the Cougars. QB Kevin Kolb was also the QB at Stephenville while Briles was coach there. Kolb essentially has run the same offense for many years with his head coach. It is a gimmicky type system that is similar to Urban Meyer's offense at Utah and now at UF.

I agree. I think it is smart on his part. The Cougars are not going to get the same players that the bigger Texas schools get so that must come up with a way to compete. He has done an excellent job with the Houston program that has been pretty much dead for a long time.

Romo is listed at 6'2 but I don't think hes that tall. If you saw the horrible video of him singing with Mr Belding then you can see they are almost the same height......

Pretty sure that Dennis Haskins (Mr Belding) isn't 6'2''......and hes older then piss right now so I wouldn't be shocked if Tony was 6'0'' maybe 6'0.5''

I don't think Dallas will run what the Cougars are doing they tend to rely a lot on the passing game and in the Pros I think the better teams are a bit more balanced on offense.

I agree, but I thought I read somewhere that Garrett would try to use pieces from a lot of different offesnes.

I would hope more pro oriented. Now days all teams are going to take certain plays from different offenses and add that to their system but certain basics I think are still a must and 1 of them is the ability to show a consistent running game.
