Cowboys will not receive compensation for Ireland
January 2, 2008 7:59 PM
Apparently there are a couple reports out there suggesting the Dolphins might have to compensate the Cowboys for hiring new GM Jeff Ireland. But as longtime Hash contributor Todd Archer points out, that's simply not the case.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has too much respect for Bill Parcells and Ireland to get into a dispute over who will have "final say" in Miami. Yes, he would've preferred Ireland sticking around for April's draft, but it's probably best for the two parties to go their separate ways. There would be an obvious conflict of interest if Ireland drafted for the Cowboys while knowing he would soon become the GM for the Dolphins. The only compensation Jones will receive is a free meal at St. Elmo Steak House during combine week.
The Cowboys knew this was coming from the moment Parcells started flirting with Atlanta. They'll probably promote assistant director of college scouting Tom Ciskowski, and then brace themselves for more departures.
If assistant head coach Tony Sparano replaces Cam Cameron, there's a good chance he'll hire Cowboys secondary coach Todd Bowles as his defensive coordinator and Paul Pasqualoni to coach linebackers.
Earlier today, I was told that Parcells' close friend, Bob Knight, was making one last plea on Cameron's behalf. Some of you might recall that Knight and Cameron were once colleagues at Indiana. From 1997-2001, Cameron went 18-37, which sounds so much better than 1-15.
Parcells had to hire Ireland first to at least create the appearance that the two are collaborating on Cameron's firing. On Friday, Sparano will begin the process of becoming the 14th person to break Arthur Blank's heart in the past month. With the possible exception of Dick Vermeil, no man in league history has made himself this vulnerable.
One last thing: There's no truth to rumors that Blank conducts interviews in a satin robe. The man prefers cashmere.
