Jerry and Stephen have done several interviews locally since the Dez signing. I don’t think all of them have made it to the internet.

Stephen said they would have used the franchise tag for 3 years if they didn’t get a contract signed.

The last estimate I saw was 23M for that 3rd year. That’s 51M for 3 years or 17M average per season.

They saved 3M per year in cap space with the contract of 9M compared to using the Tag 3 times.

The compromise was that they guaranteed money now instead of the last 22M not being guaranteed for 2 years. They did delay the guarantee of about 13M for a year in the contract.

There was a lot of focus on Roc Nation despite the fact that Jerry said emphatically that they were not part of the negotiations in regards to the numbers. That was Tom Condon’s job.

Jerry and Stephen made the odd move of going to visit Roc Nation at their place.

My opinion is that the biggest holdup has been concerns about Dez off-field issues and his new association with Roc Nation and the fact that he dumped the advisor that the Cowboys know, David Wells. I think Jerry and Stephen went to NYC to check out Roc Nation and Jay-Z. They wanted assurances that Dez would be getting good life advice from them. Jerry said that Jay-Z and Roc said they would take it as a negative on their own reputation if Dez got into trouble which seemed to be a good answer for Jerry. Jerry emphasized that Dez would listen (repeated actually listen) to Jay-Z which I took to indicate that Dez won’t listen to most people.

Some local insider types said on the radio that Jerry’s secretary has been helping Dez pay his bills in the past. They also said that the Cowboys have a person that is responsible for making certain that Dez wakes up on time to get to practice and other functions. Those are both amazing if true.

It was interesting that they deferred 7M of his signing bonus. The Cowboys rarely do that anymore. It’s normally done by teams that have cash flow issues. It seems as if they really just didn’t want him to get too much money in his pockets all at once. Jerry even made some reference in one of the interviews about a concern with Dez being out of money at some point. I think it was in reference to how Roc could help him.

Back to some Cowboys insider types on the radio, they said the Cowboys see it as a good thing that the contract didn’t get done until the very last minute because that minimizes the time Dez has to go on a world spending spree before training camp. They also said the Cowboys have some concerns that he’ll be out of money by year 3 or 4 and would then be discontent and wanting more money from the team. They also said that Dez has several people on some type of payroll and provides fancy cars for several people.

Back to the Franchise Tag. I thought the fact that Stephen said they would use it 3 times was interesting and could be a factor in the future with other players.

I am not in the least bit surprised. Nice kid. Good kid.
Talented beyond belief, but still a kid and may just remain a kid until... who knows? He may always be a kid.

Thank goodness he has the means to support his himself and his family and his future generations despite himself.

I think this is very much a feel good story.

I expected the team would want to use the franchise tag three years in a row on Dez Bryant in the event a long term extension couldn't be agreed upon.

I didn't feel it would come to that because both sides had so much to gain by avoiding playing under the tag.

But Tom Condon knew receiving three tags was a possibility, reports had him asking for $50M in guarantees before common ground was discovered hours ahead of the extension deadline.

I used $48M guaranteed over the first three seasons in a contract projection during last season, and wasn't far off, but I was expecting the contract to run at least 7 seasons givens all the "Cowboy for life" talk that was getting bandied about.

Certain players are worth the financial commitment.

Franchise QBs, edge rushers, LTs and CBs.

It sounds like some form of babysitting will always be required for Dez. At the end of the day it's a very small investment by the organization to ensure Dez stays on the straight and narrow.

The 3rd year it becomes based on the highest 5 contracts at all positions, not just at WR.

I read that using the franchise tag for a third time is either a 140% increase from the second tag or equal to the QB franchise tag that year, whichever is greater.

I'm not surprised or mad that some people in the Cowboys organization had/have to help Dez pay his bills and get up on time (if true). Dez hadn't received that type of training in his life prior to getting with the Boys. I'm glad they care enough in their investment to offer the assistance. It will be better for everyone in the long run.

I don't believe a 3rd tag has ever been used
I think jerry really cares about dez the person, not just dez the player
Jerry has always been there for many of the players.
I'm surprised the league doesn't do more to help players manage their money. I know they have lots of symposiums about finances and behaving off the field but for the most part many of these young players aren't financially mature enough to handle not only such a large sum of money but understand the reality that it has to last the rest of their lives
I'm sure many here say they could handle it but in your mid 20's most people don't see the lifetime implications of the decisions they make
I'm all for the team paying their bills, watching over them or what ever else it takes to not only make sure they are on the field helping this team but growing as men

I'm in the investment business. How exactly are you going to do that?

Really
If he is that good I got a job for him
I've invested myself for many years and have been pretty successful but that's totally out of the realm of reality

Most kids aren't given any kind of decent financial advice these days, much less kids coming from a troubled background. You can do a lot of good with a lot of money but you can also buy a bunch of trouble, and we all know the parasites will come swarmin as if they haven't already been. Jerry and Stephen are right to be worried. Hopefully Dez does in fact listen to the music mogul's people.

If someone is financially assisting Dez within the organization, we've got a cap violation on our hands

Dez "paying" his friends and buying cars for them to drive isn't anything new. I've mentioned this on a few occasions.
