Jerry Jones: In increasing Tony Romo's input, Cowboys taking page from Roger Staubach era
Jerry Jones: Tony Romo is ‘qualified’ to help shape game plans
Jones: I want to use everything in Tony Romo's computer
Jason Garrett: Romo has always been involved and that will continue
Tony Romo’s newfound influence in the Cowboys offense seems to be growing by the day.
It started with team owner Jerry Jones comparing the time commitment the Cowboys expect of Romo with that of Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning. Now, Jones is invoking the name of one of most legendary players in franchise history: Roger Staubach.
“[Romo] has a unique grasp of offensive concepts. The people who are around him the most, his coaches, tell me he’s never had a bad idea. So if you think about it, where he is right now, he’s 10 years older than most of the players out on that field,” Jones said during an interview on Sirius XM’s Late Hits with Gil Brandt Alex Marvez. “Now, we think his skill level is very much right where we would hope it would be and will be for several years to come. But what we want to use more than we ever have is the kind of thing … that [Roger] Staubach contributed on the field – really, input into designing a plan that helps beat that opponent.”
Gil Brandt, one of the show’s co-hosts and a scouting director under former Cowboys coach Tom Landry, relayed some details of Staubach’s relationship with his old head coach. Staubach, Brandt said, was “in Tom’s ear as early as Tuesday” each week, and the pair had a regular Thursday night meeting at Landry’s house to go over the parts of the game plan that Staubach did and didn’t like.
Jones didn't specify if he wanted Romo to have that much say in the Cowboys’ game plan each week, but he seems keen on giving the quarterback a chance to put his signature on the offense.
“Well, you think about a guy that’s been behind the center … they’ve seen it and they know what it looks like when it’s coming at them. They know how loud it is out there,” Jones said. “And plus, we all know that when it’s your idea and you’ve got to execute and you’ve had input into the idea – or for that matter, it’s your idea – it just seems to work better. We all do better when we’ve got a little bit of our own proprietary input into it.”
